Tama Star Classic, with Birchwood Toms and Kick.
Anyone know anything about this drum set or have any opinions on it?
The basic 4 piece set consists of Kick, and 3 toms. It runs about $1150 at GC. No cymbals, no hardware. Good deal?

I've heard good things about the star classic line, I hear the shells sound really really nice.. that may be a little pricey for a birch kit but if you're not getting any hardware. you asked and that's about all I can offer.

Thanks vaugn.
I would think a birch kit would be better for a studio application as they tend to be less punchy or perhaps more mellow than maple?

Hey, I'm pretty sure that's the star classic performer series, the birch shells. My buddy has them and I like them. They are birch so it's definately different than maple. Make sure you shop around before getting them though. If you are into birch check out the yamaha birch custom absolute and premier's birch artist series. I'm selling a Premier Signia kit if you are interested (just thought I'd throw that in). Good luck

Starclassic Birch

I've played several with interest in buying as well. I currently own a Starclassic Maple Kit. I didn't think it was worth trading in my kit to purchase the Birch Kit. It does have more low end / which is one of the characteristics of birch. However it doesn't have as much crack and punch as the maple I currently own. If I was going to use it for mainly recording it would be well worth it. However I need a kit that is more diverse. I'm not saying that you couldn't use it to play out live with. Its just that I find the maple to carry better with a nicer ressonance.

However lots of drummers use birch live and have great success with their stage sound.

my old drummer (he just left) had one--tama starclassic performer series birch.

it's a nice kit, but:

if you (or the drummer) sucks, it still sounds bad.

if you (or the drummer) doesn't know how to tune them, they still sound bad.

but yeah they are decent...I agree that it's a bit pricey for the sound. I have a 5 piece basswood Mapex kit that always sounded better than his (could be tuning....not sure)

I'd go with maple if you can.
