Taking the BIG leap into 1" analog

More expensive format,and maintenance, but I have to say I'm pretty
stoked about my recent acquistion : an OTARi MX70 1" 8track.

Comes with all manuals, the autolocator, and few spare reels of tape
to get started . The seller, a doctor, upgraded to a 24-trk Studer :cool:
and put this and a 24 trk Otari MTR90II up on the block.

Has a slight issue with Fwd and Rwd that the seller is having none other
than NYC tech John Klett(an Otari specialist) take care of for me.

He also has a neighbor who owns a freight Co. handling the shipping, so it
will arrive safely and hassle-free. He also offered to pay a 1/3 on the
shipping !! Not done, yet .. he offers a 1-week trial, and will take the
machine back if I don't like it minus shipping costs.

I lost a very good deal a few months ago on an MX70 and have been sick
about that ever since ,, but now I feel much, much better .

This is going to improve my home recording efforts 100-fold while still being
a relatively lower cost, realistic machine to own, vs. a heavier 2" 16trk.

This one is only about 175 lbs; very manageable/movable .

May I ask how much such a machine costs on average? Are these 1" 8 tracks very rare, and is Otari the only company that made them?

If you think about it, the sound quality is probably even better for such a machine than a 2" 24 track, since each track on the 1" 8 track is wider.

Albini has a MCI 1" 8 track

Without a doubt !
This has been a dream of mine for at least 15 years, but it's never been
more affordable, until now.

There not terribly hard to find, but there are certain brands that, by now
you might steer clear of .

The MCIs can be a good bet, and there is still good parts support for them;
the JH110s

Otari 1" 8 can be had if you look around; like some of the online brokers.
The Ampexs can be dicey, they're around,and sound good from what I
can gather, but maintenance and parts availablity can be an issue.

Tascam ATR-60 is pretty rare, but is top shelf; I guess most people that
have these are keeping them !
Then there are the Studers which are nice but pricey for a good machine

I wanted but don't absolutely NEED a 2" 16 track, and defintely didn't want
to contend with the weight of the machine, the added complexity of the
electronics, & the price of 2 inch tape; so the 1" 8 seemed the smart choice.

Some claim that the top end 24 track machines are very close to the 16
and 8 track (1/8" standard width), but I just don't need all of those tracks,
and even 16 tracks for a one man operation would be a huge luxury.

I'm just recording my music; strictly serious amateur home recording .

I'm sooooo excited for the arrival of this baby .
