I write and record songs. Nothing too complex or anything. I decided to go the route of writing the songs before starting a band. Kind of a solo deal. Partly because I have not had a good experience in bands.

I want to promote my demos without performing. Any advice on marketing music without a band?

Promote to who? The public, or the industry? If it's to the public, the first thing to do is stop calling it a demo. Nobody wants to buy a demo. They want an album. Or an EP. If you don't think what you've got is up to what *you* would consider "album quality", you need to start by getting something that is.

The next thing is to get it on something like cdbaby.com where you have access to a global customer base.

Then it comes down to some internet marketing. All I can say is good luck and don't expect to go platinum.

If you want some local sales, your only hope would be getting your stuff into some local indie record shops, and trying to get some airplay; maybe on a college station or something like that. Without performances I wouldn't count on a lot of local sales.

You'll probably find, like most indie bands, that without performing it's extremely hard to get sales.

The “EP” vs. mixtapes and LP’s
Why We Promote in EP format:

With the EP, you can
a. get a product in the market quicker
i. takes as much as 1 - 2 years to complete a full LP
ii. supplements income/budget to working on full LP
b. generate buzz quicker
i. showcases the actual talent (flyers, posters do not)
ii. spotlights the artist . . . no “outshining” possibilities

I am sort of in the same situation. Sort of. I am in a group. I am also very much a solo artist -- primarily because everything about my personal life history has always steered me towards the "do for self" creed.

NOw, I am still working to promote my group's projects, but I must also promote my solo project.

And on that note, Please read the following:

the songs: fall back (i mixxed it)
u still wit me (mixxed at a prof. studio)
surrounded (mixxed at a prof. studio)
--im still learning about mixxing down n what not --

i tried sev. dif. things . . . lookin at various mixxing books, and
software how to's, etc.

i didnt wanna go overboard on any one effect . . . (bass, reverb esp.)

let me know!!!

--------I am working on my EP now. HOpefully it will be finished in a month and I will then start working at promoting offline as well.

peace

if you're looking for a record deal, VERY few companies seem to want to have anything to do with artists that don't have a live act. Most sell albums because they're on the road. you wipe that out, and you've even less marketability.

good luck man! :)
