Yeah I know this is a loaded question and I plan to do various research - but we have plenty of knowledge on this site that will be a great strating point.
I'm currently useing a 5 year old Pentium II 450CPU with 14 Gig drive. I have an old Layla 20 bit 8 in - 10 out with an MQX-32M for MIDI (total of 48 channels of MIDI with Layla & the MQX). I use Cakewalk Pro 9 as my recording medium, but I also have an ADAT which I don't currentl use, but would like to have hooked up (perhaps for vocals). I use a PC platform, which is what I plan to stay with.
I want to upgrade, but I want to stay with Cakewalk (I know my way around it). I'm sure I can get a better A/D converter. I have never used the 8 ins but I do always use 6-10 outs. The audio is always vocals and guitars, everything else including drums is MIDI (so I do use most of the 48 channels of MIDI).
I could get by with 2 A/D ins (although having 8 is nice just in case) but the more outs the better.
The computer is simply a recording medium - I use hardware mixers, synths & effects. I have no plans to use software plug-ins (too much already invesed in hardware). I have some reasonably decent pre-amps to run into the A/D - so that is not a concern.
So, if I upgrade to a faster computer with maybe 100 gig and buy a better A/D interface (and something to tie the ADAT in to the system - what are some suggestion, things I should be ware of or concerned about.
Your input & expertise is appreciated.
