synthesizer basics?

does anyone have any good links for the basics on synths? i originally bought my midi keyboard to aid in making drum patterns but i really like playing around with soft synths. i just don't know exactly what some of the parameters do. i can play around with the parameters until i find some sounds that i like but i can't really put together a sound that i have in mind, which is what i'd like to be able to do.
