I'm interested in buying a synth, but a lot of my reasoning for wanting one is to process outside sources through the filters. Is there a way to buy a set of filters like you'd find in an old synth without the synth? Probably not, and probably dumb, but I thought I'd ask.

yeah there is...look for filters by Electrix...they vary in price but pop up on ebay every now and again...this is their filter factory...

a cheaper, but nevertheless authentic (analogue even) purchase is a Korg montron...this has the same filter as an MS-20: one voltage-controlled oscillator, one voltage-controlled filter, and one low frequency oscillator...theyre only around $50 so you could daisy chain them if you want

I run a Korg EA-1 through one and get some blinding, if rather noisy at times sounds, especially basslines

the EA-1 will take audio as well and has no keyboard (just sequencer) so can be used primarily for its filters but is missing an LFO (where the monotron comes in)

I've kinda got a hard on for that filter factory now!!!! That looks awesome and is just what I was looking for. So, word!!! But I have to wait a few months till money pans out!!!

Thanks man.

I was drooling over that yesterday. I have their Warp Factory vocoder, and it's awesome. You can do all kinds of trippy instrument effects with it, not just vocoding.

Do I understand that it actually has a wave generator so you could supply a keyboard and it would be a full on synth?

WHat of that monotron? Does it accept midi so you can play it without the ribbon keyboard?

what has a wave generator? the electrix? thats purely a filter

the montron has some homemade kits appearing so it can take midi...but for $50 your not going to get midi from the start, that would be too awesome

the ribbon keyboard is pretty rubbish..Ive seen vids of folks making songs with it but it wont be me lol, I just wanted that beautiful fat as fuck filter :D

the bass on the "Monsters" song I did with Joeym (in my sig) was through the montron...its meaty

I know,...me too:D

I Looooooooooooove my MONOTRON!

It's even better when I hook it up to one of my tape echos!
A whole new world!
The bass, that little bastard puts out...is other worldly.
You can't go wrong for $50-$60...
MS-20 FILTER!!!:D

MS-20 FILTER!!!:D

Tape echo :(...you bastard ;)

for what it is, and its price, it should be the best selling piece of music gear in the world :)

I'll say. I have the ER, ES, and EA going into a UB802 mixer. I'm gonna stick this puppy in the fx send loop. :D

I know:D

I have SEVERAL:D:D:D!!!

If there is anyone I know that needs one,...it IS you.

If I ever decide to sell one off, or if I find one at decent price...
I'll get at ya. The Clown definitely NEEDS one! Especially with the tunes you make!

You should try your monotron through that GS-201 simulator...(if you haven't already)
I'd be willin' to bet that it'll sound like a different monster!

x2 to that!!!

It actually goes outta tune in the cold, just as a real analog synth does.
I experienced this for the first time the other night, when I brought it
to my practice spot, where the temp. was a bit brisk.
I thought it was broke at first, or the batteries were dyin'...
but all I had to do is...tune it on the back with a little watch screwdriver.

The best $59.00 I've ever spent on a piece o' gear!
Hasn't left my side yet. Goes everywhere with me. Just like the box says...
"GO ANYWHERE ANALOG"!!!

Can probably get boring really quick for someone who doesn't understand synthesis, though...it is a good place to start.
I've got 2 of 'em now. Run one right into the other's filter.:D

yeah i use a cheap GSI vst version...which aint bad..Im not going to fork out $249 for the UAD version..Id rather own a real one...as soon as I settle down Ive got a few bits of hardware I want...that, a JC-120, and a Dave Smith Prophet...

but if you ever do sell one ;)

Well then the monotron it is!!!! It's cool that this wacky idea I had wasn't so dumb after all. Next year, when the "studio" (to be read "collection of gear in one place") gets started, that'll be on my list of things to buy.

Ain't nothin' wrong with that!:)

whats that? you want to give me one for christmas? bloody hell mate how generous!!
