Syncronizing Cool Edit with VSTi MIDI app

I would like to continue recording in Cool Edit Pro, because I have always used that program and it works really fine. It seems like all the other DAWs I've tried are too complicated and too powerful for my CPU.

But what I miss are the possibilites to create compositions on a piano roll using VSTi dll files like EZdrummer. I would like to use an additional but simple application for making arrangements like drum loops and synthezisers, and then syncronize Cool Edit and that app, in such a way that Cool Edit will communicate to the other app, telling him where he is now in the song, and what tempo we are dealing with.

I would like to then multitask between the two programs, so that my MIDI or whatever, arrangements of the VSTi can be edited, if say, I've found out that the drumbreak I originally had, didn't fit so well with the guitar that I've now sampled in Cool Edit Pro.

Has anyone here done something like this before? I've noticed the MASTER / SLAVE and SYNC options in Cool Edit Pro. Surely this would be the right stuff for my desires?

And yes. Which MIDI / VSTi / Arrangment application will be compatible with Cool Edit Pro?

I am hoping for some good tips and advice here.

If you have Reason (and I think FL Studio too) you can use ReWire. It will do exactly what you're wanting.

Or you could make life easier/cheaper by just getting Reaper (http://www.reaper.fm). ;)
 
I actually thought my computer would be good enough for this kind of operation, but maybe it ain't. What I got is an AMD Sempron 2500+ 1750 Mhz with 256 KiB cache from year 2004. And 512 MB of DDR RAM...

They recommend multiple processors, and 1 GB of Ram for running Reaper..
 
I did a few albums in reaper on less computer than that.

If you want to use cool edit, you could run VST-i's thru reaper's rearoute or rewire system locked to cool edit

I have an AMD 1.2GHz, 512MB RAM, and Reaper runs smooth without any problems, even with a significant amount of plugins on.
