I've always wondered this, since I don't have anything firewire, but how are they synced? I don't see wordclock inputs on most of them. I just can't see how they would play nice with other devices.

Some do have word clock. My Motu828mkII does.

But if you are talking running multiple Firewire audio streams (Motu says I can daisy-chain 3 of my 828mkII's for 60 inputs) then that is probably all handled by the firewire drivers they have written.

If you are very serious about wanting to chain devices, I wouldn't waste my time posting on general boards.... you should contact the engineers of the particular interface you are wanting to purchase before you go down a road and find out there isn't a way to do what you ultimately want!

Most of them have either word clock or coaxial S/PDIF. S/PDIF contains embedded clock information, and can thus serve as a clock source. Note, however, that devices with S/PDIF can't necessarily slave to a pure word clock signal via the port (and possibly vice-versa). Thus, both devices need to support one or the other, or else you may end up needing to use an external clock that provides both output formats.
