Im multitrack recording the audio live and trying to hook back up with the digital video. I can use the cameras SMPTE or now I'm hearing that if I import the video I can do the whole thing from within the software. (cubase/logic) Anyone have experience with this kind of thing?

Thanks

Yes, done it lots.

record with the camera mike on
and yes you can use smpte tracks and miditimecode, but you need more gear to do that and it isn't nescessary really.

you do all the audio work in the audio software (I have PARIS) till you mix down to your final stereo .wav.

you import the DV into the video editing software. You will have your audio and video tracks.

The "key" to everything is the camera audio track, to synch in any video editing you do. Preserve that audio track untouched and unbroken.

say you cut to a close up, or cut out a piece to put effects on, that close-up/cut even from another camera will have the same audio track as the original. With a little magnification it is much easier to synch the peaks of the audio track to each other, which then synchs the video.

when done with the videowork, you should still have your unbroken audio track.
import the .wav you did in the multitrack (make sure it is the same sample rate etc before importing) and drag it into one of the spare audio tracks (a video editor usually has several available tracks for audio, with basic mute, fade, normalizing etc).
again, you synch your DAW .wav to the camera .wav and presto, you are in snych.

You can even take the .wav from the camera if it has sounds you want, even export it and clean it in the DAW and put it back in.. but always keep the original in place and synched to the original base video. synch all audio including reworked camera audio to that on the multitracks built into the video editor.

then render and its done.
