Me ad my friend are trying to record on my new computer with a c-media soundcard. We used fruity loops to do a metrenome track and then recorded a guitar track. When we listened back to it the guitar was off from the metrenome track even though we played with the metrenome. Is there a setting I can adjust to get the track to sync or do I need another soundcard. Thanks in advance Matt

What computer are you using? OS?

Are you actually recording audio in Fruity Loops? Thats not what it was really intended to do...

I have windows xp. I exported the click track to cooledid pro 1.2a. Sorry about forgetting to add that. However something amazing happened. Right after I made this post me and my friend pressed a few buttons and it now sync perfectly. Do not know how but I was suprised. Thanks though Matt

Now the crazy problem is that sometimes it will be in sync and sometimes it will not be. What should I do. Thanks Matt

You're defining latency - the time it takes for your sound card and PC to process and record sound.
The processing time will cause a delay between what is played on your instrument and the point in which it will record.

You can measure and set latency on your software, overcoming the problem for two tracks. But the problem is more evident as you increase the number of tracks you're recording. The only way I was able to overcome it is to zoom in to the audio tracks, measure latency, and delete the latency time from the track.

If you have any questions on how to measure latency, email me at: homestudio1@aol.com

Thanks for your help. I however do not think its latency because sometimes the tracks will sync together and sometimes they will be off by half a beat. Could it just be a defected soundcard and that I need to get a new soundcard. Thanks Matt

homestudio1,

Latency doesn't cause what you record to be behind what is already recorded -- if it did no one would be using computers to record. Latency does cause softsynths to respond slowly to MIDI notes in real-time (the MIDI messages have to be received, interpreted, sent to the software synth engine, and the synth engine then sends audio data to the audio stream) and causes output monitoring or live monitoring of plug-in effects (routing your recorded part through the effect and then back out to the audio stream) to be noticeably behind what's already recorded.
