Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows about the possibility of syncing my tascam 8 track with protools 6.0 and the digi 001,
my goal is to have more tracks to record to.

I presume you're talking about transport sync (not wordclock). If so, look at the manual for your 8 track - does it lock to MTC (MIDI TME CODE) and respond to MMC (MIDI MACINE CONTROL)? If so, you're good to go. Hook up MIDI cables between the DAW and the recorder and set the DAW as master and the 8 track as slave. If your 8 track doesn't use MMC & MTC, you're probably out of luck*.

*there are some other possibilities, but they are more complex and may involve external synchronizer/translator units (i.e. hardware boxes that cost $$)

I had a TASCAM 4 track that used FSK to sync but it turned out to be a nightmare. It would drift wlowly over the course of a song to be about a beat off by the end..totally lame.

It could start the sequencer but it would not chase anything. My conclusion: FSK sucks.

What kind of TASCAM board do you have?

It's relatively easy to slave a DAW to tape. You just need a <$100 smpte - MTC convertor. You will lose one track on the 8 track because you will need to record the SMPTE time code signal. Then the convertor will convert it to MTC and you hook up a midi cable to the DAW.

Getting the analog deck to follow the DAW can only happen if the recorder was built to do that.

Hey Tex Road kill, This was my initial thought, and the way I thought I may have a shot at this, I suppose that the MOTU stuff is what I need to look at? and is this a pretty reliable method?
I dont care what machine is the slave per say, I am just trying to have some tracks left for a couple of guitars or what ever when I am done using every mic and track I have on the kit. So I was kind of hopeing for your answer

To answer spinsterwun I have a Tascam 312 b , does that make a difference at all or not really?

It doesn't matter what brand you use. A lot of companies made them. MidiMan used to have some cheapie ones that worked fine. I used to chase my DAW to video tape for film scores. I think theirs was called the Sync Man or something like that.

Do a search on EBAY for Midi Sync and a lot of stuff comes up. You need something that will read and generate SMPTE and convert it to MTC (midi time code).
