Does anyone know of an extremely realistic DXI for quartets or symphonies that isn't extremely expensive? Anything around $1,000.00 or way lower would be nice.

There is no such thing that is "extremely realistic." There are plenty of excellent sampler libraries for virtually any sampler out there. But realism requires realistic rendering of performance techniques. Just sending a MIDI score to some magic box will never sound realistic with currently available magic boxes.

Ah.... Of course -

You'll need Magic Box 2.0 which will be released next fall at NAMM 2004.

:)

I got decent results out of Reason 2.5 and it's Orkestra sound library. Other people swear by Gigasampler, but - can you say "Ka-Ching!!" (AND make it sound like a cash register.......)

Vsampler, included in 3.0PE as a DXi, also can take anyone's orchestra samples and reproduce them.

How good it sounds depends upon your scoring and MIDI programming - not just the range and quality of your samples.

To get reasonable sounding results I normally compose on a general patch then switch to mix each track using four or five patches - loud, soft, staccato, tremelo and maybe glissando or sforzando crescendoes. Balance the volume levels out in the sampler, dump it to a WAV track and then start on the next instrument.

Edirol Orchestral DXi ROCKS!!!! Check 'it out :)

I`m glad you mentioned that one James. I use it, like it, and it`s really got a lot of potential in several different venues. I didnt like the way they sampled the piano though, a little too ambient sounding.

If I remember correctly, it's only ~ $285 couple months ago. I've been hunting such orchestral tools for years, and this one came as perfect solution for "general purposes" orchestra. Giga is the best I've heard, but you'll need to try and spend additional bucks on sample CDs available on the market before you get what you realy want to hear. This package is simple yet powerfull solution IMHO...

...and I'm a cheap bastard! :p :D

ps. You're right, Toki, the piano is.... umh...

There are two good ones in the $250 price range:

1. EASTWEST/QUANTUM LEAP SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA SILVER EDITION (EWQLSO SE)
http://www.soundsonline.com/sophtml/details.phtml?sku=EW-161

The EWQLSO SE is on sale through February 20th at $236 + $9 for shipping.

-------

2. Garritan Personal Orchestra (GPO):
http://www.garritan.com/

The GPO costs $250 + $15 shipping.

----

I ordered EWQLSO SE because it comes with a choir (voices of the apocalype samples), a great piano (Steinway), an organ Mozart himself used, and is said to have better sounding samples than GPO. GPO has better strings and better ease-of-use-composing features though... EWALSO has better brass and its strings are fine for me...

GPO also comes with a sequencer and notation facilities, so it's a great one-shot deal for people looking to just start into it. It sounds pretty good...good for classical stuff.
