swr sm-500 bass head

my bassist loves the head, but the dude at guitar center wont give it to him for what he said...so, is there any other head out there, swr, ampeg, gallien krueger, that is comparable to this head, but at like half the price...like 700 bucks?? hes looking for nice and crisp and clean, sorta like the guy from mudvayne...which one of these brands would give him that tone??? and also, how many watts should he be looking at? 300 watts??? were starting to plays clubs and he needs something he will just end up selling..will he need more?

I've heard good things about the SWR workingman's 4004. He might want to look at it. Gallien-Krueger make amps that are supposed to be very clean, but some people say they're too 'sterile' sounding. I'm not really sure what that means.

yeah we were lookking at the 4004 on the net-how does it compare with the 2x10 C combo....tone and watt wise???how many watts would you suggest? the 2 10c says 260 with just the combo and supposedly 400 with an extension cab, im not sure how that exactly works out, or what ohm rating thats at? so if you could explain that? thanks for your help
