For those who liked "Brown Haired Ordinary Looking Girl" (posted earlier), this is the same assembly of musicians working together. Some of these guys I've worked with since my teens - back in my college band. It's kind of wicked different what is available to us now that didn't exist in the early 80s.

My quick question on this is that I have been trying to walk the tight line between detailed sonics and limiting, so the inquiry is simple: Does this sound "too squashed"?

My aim is a lot of detail, and frankly, loudness - but I don't want folks to be able to "hear the compression". So - can you?

Thanks in advance for the extra ears!!

sounds good compression is fine. lead guitar on left in intro is a tiny bit to loud

There's a lot of compression on the opening guitar, and it's noticeable. Overall the mix sounds very forward.

On this one, I think I need to revisit the levels. I'm in full agreement with your assessment. I want it to sound less "pressed" and more natural, w/ clarity. It's still a little "shouty".

Agree. Opening/lead guitar too squashed. It needs to be softer (in the intro) and have more dynamics. It is not competing with much, so it does not need to compressed. I like the vocals. Less compression would give more a live performance feel.

Busy holiday weekend prevented earlier reply - but I have been still listening and revising the mixes. This is where this one currently sits;

It sounds okay - the Compression isn’t too much - except the drums are compressed sounding - did you compress them and then add the compression on the mix buss?

Yes, but I tend to not compress too heavy on the drums anywhere along the chain. I do 3-4:1 while tracking ... but set the threshold up at a reasonable level. Then I lightly hit the buss w/ a compressor just further tame the kit, and a very light limiter to "trim the tops".

For detail and depth of sound, I also convert the kick/snare to midi and then blend in several variations of midi kick and snare to augment the edges of the sound and add clarity (w/o room).

But if I were to classify compression on the drums, I'll actually frame it as "light to medium" compression.
