I was in a band (Jakob's Ladder) and we did this song we ended it with doing "Rhymin' and Stealin'". As a vocalist, doing this song was always challenging and I always made it one of the last songs in a set cuz it was so harsh on the throat. The recording doesn't sound that bad, but the vox has got to go and never return. Ever.

Well you certainly captured the 'Mechanic Grind' that Iommi and Butler were famous for... No need to comment any further on the vox, I'm guessing you've heard enough about them eh? ;)

I missed hearing the ad-lib/cut loose tom rolls behind the guitar solo...

Us drummers key in on weird stuff eh?

Doing good stuff!

:)

Sabbath had some of the nastiest sounding guitars ever recorded, lol. They were pretty much making it up as they went.

you're kidding right? I mean, surely this asinine statement is tongue in cheek.. just thought I'd ask because I didn't see an 'imho' or anything..

Dogman - very strange what you did @2:45.. I was wondering how you would handle that part because everyone who's covered this did something different there.. some nice solos in spots..

the cut @4:10 is terrible.. timing issues.. recording is a little too crisp.. singer needs to belt it more.. many issues but a good try.. keep crackin'!

nope, not kidding. I.M.H.O., some people let their biases about music interfere with what they're hearing. Fuzztones played with 3.5 fingers. Great for the time...dated. Whatever, I'm country, remember?

in many many peoples opinion's including my own, it is some of the greatest recorded sounds in musical history.. I've never heard anyone get quite the same sound.. Tony made the sound great.. I'm not one of those people who think greatness has an expiration date.. 'dated' is a word associated with pop standards..

saying - "but you know, Sabbath had some of the nastiest sounding guitars ever recorded, lol. They were pretty much making it up as they went. "

this could just mean the music was too heavy for you..

glad we could clear that up, and yes you do do the pop country rock thing very well.. :p

Thanks for the comments. Anything good in this version is due to James Sloan, aka homegrown sloan. Anything bad, especially the vocals, is my fault. I need some help in getting my mic, pre setup properly. Trying to actually sing, I've had no luck on anything worth keeping. I just redid some of the vocals, and will work on getting them posted. Took some of the rasp out, but they sound weird. I'll keep trying.
Thanks
Ed

I think you just misunderstood what I meant. "nasty" in relation to Tony's guitar tone wasn't a slam...it's just a fact. "Making it up as they went along" is another fact. It just means they were groundbreaking...and since I had 2 older siblings in the early 70's, I started listening to Sabbath when I was about 5; the "too heavy for me" comment made me laugh...a lot. Thanks for that.

actually no.. it's not a fact.. "nasty" is your opinion.. an adjective..

and I can tell you started listening to Sabbath at 5.. their influence is obvious in your acoustic country songs.. :p

would a true Sabbath fan describe their sound as dated?

nope..

then again that's mostly imho..

;)

I can agree that they had an interesting tone. Caught my attention when I was about into puberty. I learned later on as I started getting into Sabbath and Priest and the like that most of his tone came from the heavy slacked tuning he did. Often tuning to C# or lower. And he played higher up on his neck on the bottom strings to make it sound heavier. And severed fingertips aside, he was a pretty damn good player. But as for calling his sound dated? Listen to bands like Korn and the like. Tell me that they are not trying to cop his tone. Yeah, it's dated, but it's still around in one incarnation or another.

You can't tell me this is coincidence...

Okay, I'm listening now.
My only complaint is that the vox aren't loud enough. MP3's always sound funny to me, so I can't/won't comment further...except to say...

I've been through the whole "it (vocals) sounds like dogs barking", "what are you trying to do, sound like cookie monster", etc. etc...

If you like it, ROCK ON!!!
You will probably get tired of it eventually, but after all...
who are you doing this for?!? :)

I have heard much worse attempts at guttaral/growly/whatever-you-wanna-call-it vocals.

Holy shit! I never made that connection! You truely are a Cellardweller!

Ok, tried to give some "lovin" back to cellardweller, and keep getting the "must spread it around" messege, so thanks dude. The vocals aren't exactly growled, I just have a really shitty voice. Actually can't figure out the new mic/pre, and how to make it work better. Any thoughts? It's an AT-4040, an M-Audio buddy pre going into a Delta 44 card. i'm using Audition to record and edit in. Vocals always come out lame. I will post the latest version this afternoon, for anyone interested.
Thanks.

Sure, I could listen to it again!

Tips on vocals: Sing it twice to double it. If you can't get the second track to line up enough with the first one, you can double it in the software, pan them about 25% each way, and add a simple delay to the 2nd track. It will help to bring them out in the mix. Also, squash the track a bit with compression. You can hear when it's sitting good. If it a performance thing, all I can say about that is: keep practicing. The more you practice, the more confident you will be in your singing. I am still working on that myself.

Ok, did some work on the vocal. The link is the same.

Let me know.
Thanks.
Ed

Well, I didn't hear the first vocal version, but this one sounds alright. That reverb at the beginning on the coughing is kind of nasty. The backing track is pretty rockin'. Keep it up!

Yeah, it sounds like your hacking up a lung. This version is a bit smoother, but it still sounds like your pitchy in spots...

Ok, Rokket, must say, SWEET AVITAR!!!

Thanks for the listen, scrubs and Rokket. Still trying to get to know my equipement.

I made an offhand comment about swinging in a tree like a monkey, so I figured I may as well have an avatar that is a monkey! :D
