I own a 488 MK][, purchased about two years ago - mainly because it had received such great reviews, and I figured that as I learned how to record, I would appreciate the added freedom that 8 tracks would offer over 4. THAT has definitely turned out to be true! :)
There's one thing that's been confusing me, though. One thing often cited when people mention the good things about the 488, is that it has "sweepable mids". I've always just used the midrange EQ the same as the highs and lows. Am I missing something, here?

Sweepable EQs have two dials as opposed to one. One for adjustment and one for Frequency. the frequency dial lets you choose the center frequency of your adjustment.. 'sweep' it to mor bass-y or more treble-y a range.

Sweepable mids refers to the fact that you can choose which portion of the frequency spectrum you want to boost or cut. Play around with the midrange settings at mixdown time (it's usually best to record with the settings "flat" and then adjust at mixdown). Start with both knobs turned to far left, and SLOWLY move the frequency knob from left to right while more rapidly moving the boost/cut knob from left to right and back again. Eventually you'll find just the right combination that gives you the sound you're looking for on each track. Spend a little time on this and you'll be pleased with the results!
