One Hit Wonder
Wow, my very first visit to the midi forum. Nice in here. I like what you've done with the place. :)

Anyway, I have a midi track that is fine up until the final note of the song. The song hits a final chord and the chord simply fades out. My problem is that the note played on the midi track fades out before the other tracks - noticeably so. No matter how long I hold the note, it simply dies at the exact same point.

Is there any thing I can do to get this note to sustain longer? I tried playing the note a second time, and while this does allow it to reach the end of the fade, you can hear where the note is being struck again - which is unacceptable.

Thanks

Gee, Dachay... Looks like no matter where you go, you'll deal with me... :D

Right, to the bussines... :) What's your MIDI device / tone generator ? What's the patch ? If you use sampler / soundfonts, i think there's gotta be a way to edit / alter the sustain length of the sample / synth. Use Vienna soundfont editor, or something.
If it's an editable external MIDI device, then there probably some function to edit your patch. I know I can do it with my Korgs (N364, X5D, O5R/W, etc) using Edit Prog function. Check yours, mate...

Yeah, sounds like the patch you are using doesn't loop the emiddle of the sample like some patches (pads, strings, winds) usually do but instead stops like a drum or plucked guitar note does.

You could edit the patch to sustain until it receives a Note Off, or you could do it after the fact, when you render the MIDI track to audio -- try stretching the note length without messing with its pitch.

Hmmm, AlChuck and James. I could have just stayed in the Cakewalk forum. :D

The patch is from a new DXi software synth I just got, Kompakt. It's in an .nki format. I have no clue how to edit it, and I'm not sure if I want to. Wouldn't that end up effecting this note everytime I use it (rather than just the one instance I want to).

I think AlChuck has the answer. I can edit it when it's output to audio (even though, since this is a DXi, I actually don't NEED to output it to audio. But I may have to in order to fix this problem.).

I also tried trimming the sustains of the other instruments, so they all ended together. That worked, but the note fade is just a tad more abrubt than I would like it to be.

How about...play the note a second time time, just as you already did, but do it on a second track, and cross fade from the first track to the second as the note on the first track fades out.
