Hi

I started to record a few months ago ,and I bought an m audio fast track ultra 8r. I record bass , guitar , vocals , and drums . Until now I recorded drums with two mics:
1.Shure BG 2.1 Dynamic Mic
2.Avlex CI33 Condensor mic
, and im thinking about buying a superlux drums mics kit : Superlux DRK-A3, or the Superlux DRK-A5 to get a better sound . Any experience ? , is it a good idea ? , would it make the drums sound better ?. I have an orange county custom kit : 1 floor , 1 tom , 1 snare , bass drum (kick) , ride , and a hi hat because I don't use a crash . Do you need two mics for the cymbals ? one mic for the ride and one for the hi hat ? because I think you don't get a mic for that in the kit ,but I can use my old condenser mic , would one mic be enough to capture the cymbals ?, can you use the mics for miking a guitar amp . I don't have an acoustic room ! , so it's hard to get a great sound

I can't speak for those kits in particular, but about 7 years ago when I was buying my first microphones... They were it. They work pretty well. And, the SDC's still stand up and I'll use them when nothing else seems to work. They're pretty good on acoustics. Hell, they beat the hell out of the Audix F15's I bought last year.

Before you go crazy on tom mics, might i suggest picking up a second condenser, preferable the same one. This will give you the ability to record in stereo, and should give you a fuller sound. Look up the condenser positions for glen johns and recorderman micing technique and play around with that.

The superluxes are okay for the price , I like them cuz they are small and actually sound pretty good but one HUGE drawback is that they are really easy to break , Out of the 5 Dynamic Superluxes I had only 2 still work and a Good smack with a Drum stick will usually render them inoperable .....

I've found this to be true also.....But my OLD 57s with muti hits to the heads still work fine.

I use a Superlux set (4 mics) in conjunction with a Behringer set (3 mics) and two Thomann condensers. Sometimes, I'll use a SM58 on the snare and the kick mic from the Superlux I'll use on the floor tom.
To be honest with you, I'm no tech head and I'm sure there are better drum mic sets about and it's good to canvas opinion. It's also pretty easy to dismiss something because someone says 'this is crap'. No matter what set you choose to go with, truth be told, until you've experimented with various positions {mic ones ! :D} and recorded a bit, you'll never know. The drum sounds that I get, I don't know what anyone would think, but I like them and I'd say go for it unless there's a compelling reason not to. Bear in mind that mine are a mix and match and you'll possibly end up that way too.

I ordered the Superlux DRKA5 pack a few weeks ago (and was delivered 2 of them by accident)

I already had a pair of AKG Perception 150's I'd been using as overheads.

The 218A mics I'm using on kick & floor tom and I'm getting good results with both. I think the 218A is better on floor tom than on kick but it isn't too shabby on the kick either and with the right placement and very little EQ I can get a decent enough sound. Also gave me what I was looking for on bass cab when blended with a DI signal.

The 228A tom mics do sound good on a well tuned kit but I'm not a fan of them for snare. ( I used my trusted sm57 for snare duty) On the up side they are GREAT on guitar cabs. I also used one on a main vocal and was pleasantly surprised. Definately good enough for backing vox in a mix.

To sum up, they aren't one trick ponys. I have heard the tom mics are easily broken although mine have taken a few thumps and are still going strong, plus the delivery mixup means I have a few laying around spare.

The price was silly stupid low.
