Super Bit Mapping?

OK... I have a vague idea of what SBM is (magically squeezing more than 16 bit audio onto a CD). There doesn't seem to much info around about - but I've noticed a few CDs make a big point of showing off about it.

How is it done? Why is it done? Is it similar to what all those fancy dithering plugins do? Does it require hardware or can it be done with software/CD writer?
 
I don't know if it's the same thing, but Sony DAT machines used to have SBM. That's where I first heard of it. I know that the Sony DAT machines sounded different than the Panasonic ones, but the difference could have been the a/d and d/a converters just as much as SBM. Actually, most people (myself included) liked the sound of the Panasonics more anyway.
