It's got a lot of potential. It's got some timing issues. I think that a quick fix that doesn't involve retracking stuff is to just turn the drum click off.

You know.... what you gotta do is lay down the first guitar really tight and listen really hard to the click while you're doing it. Even if it isn't recorded or played exactly like you want it to be.... it has to be tight in time. Then you can build off of that and re-do the first one if you need to. What happens to me is..... when I track a bunch of stuff.... I'm inclined to listen to the musical instruments sometimes more than the click. Sometimes I really have to concentrate to listen to the click or percussion if there is a musical instrument that is out of time. The tendency is to go with the guitar, or the singer.. or whatever.

I don't know if that helps or not. I liked the piece though. Just need to tighten it up.

Yeah, I appreciate the listen and suggestions. I think you're right. My intention was to use the drum loop for a metronome and then add the "real"drums when the song was nearly complete. And I think I did exacly what you said about listening to the guitar for overdubs instead of the drum track. I've noticed it, but somehow convinced myself it was not an issue...I know now that I was wrong. I'll give it a listen and see if everything is tight without the click track...if so, I'll ship it off to a drummer friend and let him bang around on it some. Cool ! Thanks a lot. :)

I'd have to agree with kjam22 about the timing issues. For the final version I'd re-record it using a mic'd acoustic.

Unless you've got a really great drummer and your parts are played perfectly to the click adding the drums after is often not a viable option. I always find it best to track the drums first to a click, but also with guide guitar, vocals and bass (ideally being played at the same time) to give the drummer the best feel for the song. Once the drums are down re-record all the other instruments to the drum track not the click. That way if the drums stray slightly anywhere the instruments will follow (hopefully). As you were (hopefully) playing along when the drums were tracked you'll have a good feeling for them, especially if you record your parts immediately after tracking the drums.

It's a good sounding song and I'd be interested to hear it when it's finished.

Pete.

Thanks

Thanks for the listen Pete. I had really sort of forced my playing to the click track, and when I mute the click, I can hear myself hesitating on the rhythm track thus screwing the timing on the whole tune. When asked, the singer didn't hesitate to tell me she had noticed it as well. Back to the drawing board! I found some good loops from "drums on demand" that I'll use...the singer and I are collaborating online and she sent a test, and she's awesome, so it'll be worth it. We're beginners at this. Thanks for the input and kind words, both of you... Jody.:) I'll be back.
