Experts,

Im a young artists that pretty much has my home studio finished. I have a macbook with pro tools software, a mbox 2 pro by digidesign and a rode NT-1000 condenser microphone. I have two questions.

First, Do I need a preamp to complete to benefit my vocals and acheive maximum quality before mixing and mastering?

If so, what are your suggestions for preamps I could purchase for my homestudio?

Note- Im willing to spend what it takes to acheive the best sound in my vocals. SO please make suggestions from the least price to the highest pricy. I will advise from there.

Thanks guys

What is wrong with the preamps on the mbox 2 pro?

moresound,

nothing really. I actually just saw alot of preamps being used with this device on videos of many different professional artists and go the the impression that it is suppose to benefit your vocals somehow.

Also, people told me that preamps help improve the "pitch" and "mellow" of your vocals.

Think so?

Some that is most preamp will color your sound it all depends on what your looking for.

If I was you I would check out the Joe Meek TwinQ. ;) It has everything and can be very versatile and beneficial!!
A quick google search will enlighten you.

Do you think that investing in a preamp is a good idea to increase the sound quality in a mbox 2?

Hey Leeks, welcome to HR.

The thing about preamps....if I were you, I would try to master the art of recording with the preamps(mbox) you have right now.....and start a small savings fund. That way, when and if you reach the time that you that feel you just cant get any better recording with what you have already,.......buy an Avedis m5 for recording vox. That is the high on my priority list of "stuff" to get. It just sounds lush, rich and expensive! Of course if you don't know what you are doing, the best equipment in the world wont help you.....;)

The Avedis M5 is a smoking preamp....you will need to buy a lunchbox or single channel strip mount as well, it is a VPR compliant module.

You can check out the "another mixing contest" thread that was started biy Guitar Zero in the MP3 Mixing Clinic....search for Karumba's entry....he won....and you can hear the M5 in action.

That's my $1.57 worth of advice.

Showstone,

Maybe you can answer this question, will i get great sound quality out of an mbox 3 mini going itno a macbook? Even though it is a USB Bus powered interface?

I have always been told go firewire instead of USB

USB is fine. You will get good quality souind, no different to firewire.

Pre-amp: I would not worry at this stage. As Showstone said, master what you have now before introducing further complexities.
