i'm sure this has been asked a million times, but it's not a question that seems to lend itself to the search engine very well...

but who's got suggestions here?
usb& firewire, 7200 rpm of course, quiet (silent?),
here's the clincher- bus powered.
as far as capacity goes, bigger the better...

mainly just getting used as the audio drive for location/laptop sessions.

thanks.

There are bus powered firewire hard drives, which is what I would suggest. There are also bus powered USB drives, of which I own one of the WD Passport series. This is a little slow for intensive audio work.

Most bus powered drives are 5400rpm also. This is because what a bus powered drive is, is basically a laptop drive in an external enclosure.

So based on my experience, I'd highly recommend a bus powered firewire drive. These are the most expensive, however.

A bus powered external drive is a very nice thing though, especially if you need to be portable for location work.

i use a Venus external HD case.. i have both SATA and ATA flavors.

cheap and reliable.... also, if you need to move information on an existing HD... just plug it into the case
