First thought is a used SM7, but my pre's don't have enough gain and i don't have enough cash for new pre's right now.

So any other suggestions out there?

Motivation for this purchase is for a female singer who sound a bit shrill at times, so i figured a warmer/darker mic might be a good match. The preamp that will be used is the one built into my MOTU 828mkii.

thanks for any suggestions :D

I'm thinking this is going to limit your potential pool of candidates to roughly zero. Maybe some cardioid condenser recorded off-axis might fit the bill....

...with anemic pres, your best bet is to scrap the "dynamic" route and go with something like the Kel HM-2d which is a condenser mic "voiced" to sound like a dynamic (the SM7 in fact)...a bargain at $179 and a 21 day money back guarantee...with just a touch of EQ the HM-2d can sound very much like the SM7...(I use both and though I prefer the SM7, the HM-2d is very nice and as a condenser mic, it has a bit more "air" and "sheen" than the SM7)...;)
