Wanting an all-purpose preamp for $300.00 or under off ebay. Reccomend me one from this list, or do a compariosn if you've heard both. feel free to suggest something else. The type of music I'm recording is something like Jimmy eat world, Our Lady peace, etc.

The only preamp I've heard is the Studio Projects, and I thought it was alright.

-Joe Meek 3Q
-Studio projects VTB1
-Electro Harmonix 12AY7 preamp
-M-audio DMP3

M-Audio Tampa, out of production = cheap. Great transparent pre with a fantastic sounding opto compressor with S/PDIF out

you can hear some samples of the Tampa with a Studio Projects B1 used on both acoustic guitar and vocals both HERE and HERE

Good luck with your search

Alec

Thanks, I'll check out the Tampa. Any other suggestions/comments?

I think the Meek box is a good value. The comp's pretty cool and the pre and EQ are very usable.

The DMP3's a nice box too though. Tons of clean gain for the price.

I just posted this in another thread:

"I own all 3. (EH 12AY7, DMP-3 & VTB-1)

If I had to use just one it would be the DMP-3 mainly because it's two channels and also it's the most neutral sounding, so it would be a practical choice. The EH pre probably has the most likeable sound.

Having said that if variation of sound is more important then the VTB-1 could suit better. Without the toob thingy engaged at all it's pretty clean but you can add a bit of something different with the tube blend dial. Not exactly tube dreaminess (it's a cheap starved plate design after all) but it doesn't sound at all bad compared to some of the cheap toob pres out there.

You wouldn't go far wrong with any of them imo."

I use a DMP3.....Good, clean and cheap. It's the only pre I have, besides an Audio Buddy, so not much other experience. It works well though.

I own a threeQ and I am more than happy with it. It works well with just about everything. The EQ is very useful for shaping. The compressor makes a guitar sound amazing - very analog-tape sounding. A good value for $200.
