I do however need to convert to 44.1 after a final export for cd, according to cakewalk. They suggest cool edit.

Congrats on the end of your long nightmare.

You can do the 44.1 conversion in Cakewalk, then export to Wave. You don't even have to save the file after conversion, just convert / export / close (no save).
