Stuttering and dropouts

Hello,

I've been using reaper now after using pro tools for the last five years and I'm liking it a lot. One problem I'm having is extreme stuttering/dropouts during recording and playback. It's not so bad with the first one or two tracks, but terribly apparent after that. This is accompanied by a flashing red transport counter. I've already tried increasing the buffer size, but this doesn't really help at all. I suspect the problem is just an old machine/not enough RAM, but I'm curious to know if there's anything I can do. Here's a better description of my rig. Thanks in advance!

iBook G4/OS 10.8.11
Mbox 1
LaCie rugged drive

I had similar issues with reaper on an old system when it was connected to the internet. Disconnected and everything was fine until the plug in count got higher.

Try disconnecting, if connected, and disable plugins when tracking.

Someone will probably have better advice though ;-)

The flashing red counter indicates a heavy load on your system, i.e. your system is struggling to keep up. Either your system is under-powered, or it is okay but there are other applications running hogging its capacity.

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

Does DPC latency checker run on a mac? I checked out the site and it doesn't seem to. Too bad for me, I suppose. I forgot to mention that my iBook only has 256Mb of RAM, but is this the problem? The "resource window" (or whatever it's called) shows me utilizing no more than 11-15% of my RAM when the dropouts occur. Maybe it's my PPC chip? Who knows.

hi. just to chime in on this older thread. i have personaly built i5 machine, windows 7 64, 4 gig ram, no other programs besides reaper and acrobat, and a mackie 8 input interface. i get random stutters and sound pauses as well during playback. this bugs me to no end. i have tried buffer settings etc...blah blah blah. cant seem to figure it out. my meter indicates low cpu usage also. i dont get it.

i'm a newbie here but i was having dropout problems with some dj software on my Toshiba A505 laptop windows 7 64 bit pc...the problem was solved when i disabled my WIFi via the device manager in computer properties... seems just shutting off my WIFi was not enough i had to disable it.. for what it's worth hope it helps :)

Most build ethernet cards like PCI onboard lan and WiFi are parallel to the soundcard.
In other words, those other devices are stealing bandwidth that you'll need for your soundcard to perform.

bummer, because i always have to google how to do things in reaper when i'm mixing. it would be nice to have wi-fi and reaper running together. i'll try disableing and see if that fixes the problem.

whoops thought this was my post on a similar topic...i am not the OP.

thanks for all this input. i appreciate it. i have fixed the problem with my rig. i havent isolated the problem but it is fixed. i have two identical pc's i just built. one just to record with. i5 2.8's msi boards, 4 gig of memory, win7 etc .... i simply swapped pcs and the other identical pc works fine. i have allot of muscle now. i think the problem was in data transfer of the hard drive. it works fine when not used to record. thanks for all the help.
