stupid question, hopefully you can help

I mainly use FL6 for midi. The problem I have is I do not know how I can use two or more midi devices at the same time. For example, I use a m-Audio Keyrig49 and a Akai MPD24. Problem is, it seems i can only use one or the other, meaning if both are plugged in, FL only recognizes one or the other.

I am thinking I need some sort of MIDI interface, something like this:

Now, what I dont understand is how it works. it seems like I would simply plug my stuff into it, and then it sends it through usb, thus allowing me to use one port on my computer and allowing me to use both devices. Am I wrong on this?

Sorry if this has been asked before, my search skills in this matter are lacking, as are my midi skills.

How do you have both hooked up? Is one "thru" the other, or do they each have their own midi interfdace on the computer? The simplest way would be for each to have its own. Running one "thru" the other can get complicated as you have to assign separate listening channels (notes and program).

If you have two separate interfaces, then in the midi setup of FL6, or anything midi-ready, you should be able to select which (or both) of the interfaces you want to use in the program. Then wherever you select midi devices in the program, you should see options for each of your devices.

Then, if your software supports instrument definitions, (*.ins) you can import one for each keyboard/module if needed so the software can name all your program voices/sounds.

Thanks for the reply. Right now I have both hooked up with their own usb port. I have tried to run both, but FL will only recogonize one, even if I have both selected in MIDI Settings. That is why I was looking at the interface option, hoping I could use one usb cable to run multiple devices into the computer.

You know what?? Im an idiot!! I just checked my keyboard and it doesnt even have midi ports at all, only USB. So my plan has been foiled.

Im going to screw around with the settings more, also try to run both in a different program and see if I can get it to work.

that must be a limitation of FL's... cubase for instance will let you have multiple input devices... ya might try searching in the preferences file in FL... you might have something you can change there...
