Stupid air conditioning...

I have an AC in my apartment that goes on and off about every 15 minutes or so, and everytime it does, it makes a very noticeable "pop" (this can be heard recording or not). Why would my AC turning on and off cause a pop? What about it interfers with the line in? Is there anything I can do about this? Obviously, I can turn the AC off while I'm recording to make sure it doesn't come on, but it gets a little hot in my apartment in a short period of time (I live in Phoenix). Is there anything I can do to keep the power going to my PC unaffected by the AC coming on and off without buying a generator? =)
 
I would imagine the pop is caused from the high current draw when the A/C compressor kicks on. Once the compressor is running, the current draw returns to a lower level at the expense of everything electrical in your house. Hence the lights dim, then get brighter, then return to normal.

I'm not sure if a power conditioner would help with this problem although it sounds like it could.
 
Well there's actually nothing you can do about it. The noise is the mechanical noise of the compressor, and the only way to get rid of it is to keep it either completely off or always on. If you set the tempertaure to an impossible limit (like say 5 celsius) the compressor will keep on going. You could also chill the room down to the lowest possible before starting a session, and keep the AC off during the session.

Shit, I was afraid of something like that. That's kinda what we did before, just got the room damn cold then turned off the AC, but it gets warm so quick... I imagine it will be easier when we get out of summer, though
 
Phoenix definately sucks for summer recording. You have to take AC breaks with your smoke breaks.

That depends. I don't think he is taking about a mechanical noise, but some kind of electrical noise. UberGawkman, can you hear the noise youself, and it is being picked up on a mic? Or, does it only appear on your recording?

If it is electrical, then Evildick's suggestion could work.

Yes, it's electrical... the pop is from a power surge thingy similar to the one EvilWeeWee described. What's a power conditioner, what does it do, and where can I get one?
