Stupid adat question

Hi, can someone summarize the difference between the different adats for me please? As I understand it, the first generation LX and XT were 16 bit and the newer LX20 and XT20 are 20 bit..but what is the fundamental difference between the LX20 and XT20 models? Thanks!

The XT20 has a better transport - more robust and faster lock-up times - and also has better converters and several more front-panel features.

But if you are going digital in and out... Who cares. :)

LX will be fine unless you are doing a LOT of shuffling with your ADAT. I think of them as nice storage devices now :)

Good point. However, I'll be taking signals from an analog board, so I'm assuming that given the marginal difference in price between a used LX and an XT that I'm probably better of with the XT?

As an owner of just about every type of ADAT (except M20), I have one blackface, one XT, two XT20's and one LX20, I'll put in my two cents. Even though I only use the three 20 bit machines as converters now, the difference between the two different 20 bit machines (if used as ADATS) is pretty broad. The XT20 is much more robust build-wise, has better converters, transport and more features(as mentioned), but what wasn't mentioned was the fact that the LX20 is prone to power supply problems. Nothing major, but could be a PITA. If you can find the XT20 for close to the same price, go with that...even if just for the converters.

Yep you;d be better off with the XT after all the XT will accept +4 signals wheras the LX is only -10db analog signals. :)

Rick. Same here Black faced, Silver faced, Bronze faced. LOL

Had em all.

Hey, thanks a lot for you input guys! Definitely going to be the XT20 then. Just joined today and look how much I've learned already :)

-10db

can you connect +4db sources to -10db input of LX 20

Not without overloading the inputs on the LX20... a +4dBu source has a signal strength almost 12dB hotter than a -10dBV input.

-10db

How is it ususally done? can you come out of a board and lower the master faser? Or there a better way?

How is what done? Connecting +4 to -10??

It isn't - not without a pad or line-level shifter.... also some gear allows you to change between the +4dBu and -10dBV gain structures, so that would work. But if you have a console running at +4 and a recorder at only -10, they're not going to be very compatible without padding the levels down.

Sure you can, just turn down the output volume of the +4 device. :)

If there is no Output volume, connect at your own risk of overload. :)

thanks

I thought that's what people do. Many thanks for the info.
I have an HD 24, what type board are some people using?
