Hi guys,

I'm writing a dissertation on the cultural aspects of home recording for my BA(hons) final year. Uni is one of the main reasons I haven't posted for a while, as well as the "new" theme feeling rather uninviting.

Anyway, as part of this dissertation I am conducting interviews and a survey. I would appreciate if you would completely either/both if you have the time.

The survey can be found here and can be completed in under a minute.

If you have further time to spare, I would appreciate very much if you could answer the interview as thoroughly as possible - please send your answers as a PM so as to not influence other responses.

Interview

Are you considered/would you consider yourself an expert, professional, enthusiast or other (please specify) with record to audio recording?

What is your personal experience with home recording?

When/why did you first become aware of home recording?

What is your main opinion of home recording nowadays?

Why do you feel bands/artists/labels still often choose commercial recording facilities over home recording?

Do you think that commercial recording facilities are still as necessary, in today’s industry, as they were before technology made home recording possible?

With audio recording technology being so readily available in today’s industry, do you think commercial recording studios will become obsolete?

Do you think recording in a commercial recording studio is still viewed as a major step forward, as it has traditionally been, in an artist’s career?

In your opinion, other than budget, what are the main benefits of home recording over commercial recording, and vice versa?

You already got mine. So...good luck with the dissertation Lee.

Just did the survey.
re you considered/would you consider yourself an expert, professional, enthusiast or other (please specify) with record to audio recording?

Beginner (enthusiast)

What is your personal experience with home recording?

I have a meager set-up I use to make music. For the record I don't "record" in the traditional sense, I write experimental electronic so there is little to no recording sounds from the real world.

When/why did you first become aware of home recording?

Last couple of years, It's impossible to get heard if you are a traditional composer because you need an orchestra to perform it. Electronic art music I can create without anyone else's help.

What is your main opinion of home recording nowadays?

Good and bad, allows a lot of interesting music to both be created and heard, but the simplicity of doing it yourself has created so much music everywhere that often it's hard to separate the good music from the bad.

Why do you feel bands/artists/labels still often choose commercial recording facilities over home recording?

Experience, quality assurance, name recognition and it feels like a smart stepping stone for their career.

Do you think that commercial recording facilities are still as necessary, in today’s industry, as they were before technology made home recording possible?

For now, yes.

With audio recording technology being so readily available in today’s industry, do you think commercial recording studios will become obsolete?

possibly, but not for some time.

Do you think recording in a commercial recording studio is still viewed as a major step forward, as it has traditionally been, in an artist’s career?

Yes.

In your opinion, other than budget, what are the main benefits of home recording over commercial recording, and vice versa?

Other than budget, there is still more control of your own work in a home studio so fringe artists might prefer the control and image of do it yourself.

Good luck
