The Ghost of FM

This is a bizarre little project between Studioviols and me, the Ghost of FM.

SV wrote the lyrics and wanted this to be a punk rock kind of tune and when I saw the lyrics, I heard something a bit different in my head.
This song is a bit of a departure for me musically, in that I don't write stuff like this ordinarily but was inspired by the words and this is what “came out.”

The song was written completely on my Yamaha Keyboard and is in essence a midi production. No real instruments were used or harmed in the making of this song!



As usual, all comments and critiques are welcome!

I'm back in Studio 54! Funny lyrics. Well sung. Perfectly mixed! Admit it, this was done in a multi-million-dollar studio.

This is fun as hell. Very, very nice. I wish I could get my shit to sound that clean. Loved it.

I don't care about mixes anymore unless they suck and this sounds fine so I'll just say I really like the performance and the tune.
Goes right into my keeper folder.

You nailed both Frank and the good Captain with some pretty slick call and response stuff! I likes it! Zany lyrics - guaranteed to piss someone off - that makes it a HIT!

Yeah, I love the gruff/smooth vocal thing going on here.

you got some nice sound out of that keyboard.. good job there. interesting stuff.. kinda funny.. it is sorta Zappa-ish.. maybe some little guitar solo bits would have added something nice.. fun tune! pretty good mix..

This stuff is great and funny. Agree very Zappa.... The mix was done well and clean. I agree with most of whats been said. Some Zappa gtr solo's would be good, ala Vai or even Frank himself.

To everybody who gave the song a listen so far, I offer my humble thanks and as well, I am sure Studioviols will be along eventually to take a bow for writing such wonderful lyrics!

Perhaps he is shy or lying dead from the shock of having his poetry trash-compacted by me? Time will tell..............

PiltdownMan - As usual, it is an honour that you checked out the tune and that you were amused and entertained by it.

This tune was not done in a multi-million dollar studio as you suspected but, simply put together on my keyboard, dumped to the 16 track and then the vocals were added one at a time.

Zappa, as is no secret to anyone that has red my posts, is my all time favourite composer and recording artist and I guess 35 years of listening to him has to rub off a little.

I am flattered that you at least could hear his influence in my arrangement and singing. Thanks!:cool:

Lt. Bob - I am so glad that you checked out the tune and deemed it fit to be a keeper in your private collection! I am honoured.

The arrangement took me a little over a week to put together and I must have tested out close to 700 sounds before I settled on the ones on this track.

I have listened to a few of your tunes as well and I will make time to hear more from you as time allows. I like your stuff too, very much so!

MC Gitarz - You must be a true and die hard Zappa fan to know of the few years that he worked with Capt. Beefheart.

I loved his contributions to Zappa's work and his solo stuff too like "Trout Mask Replica. I loved putting his spirit and style into what I did with the vocals.

Did you know he was also quite a good painter too?

kjam22 - As it seemed to be a tradition right from the start of my arrival here, you have been a reviewer of my stuff and I am touched that you liked the track and appreciated the twisted attitude of what I was trying to pull off with SV's very cool lyrics.

B.SABBATH - Thanks for checking out the tune and glad you got a chuckle from it! It, of coarse was designed, at least in my mind, to be a comedy tune of sorts about a fairly dicey topic for a lot of people.

You ideas about the guitar solo are right on the money. I was planning on doing one today but I am still getting over a very bad blister on my finger and it's about half way healed at this point so, as soon as it heals, I will do my best to get that down on tape and mixed into the track.

When I first read SV's lyrics, I didn't quite know what to make of them but his cover story dragged me into thinking about the tune and seeing as it was actually about a straight guy being pissed at the gay phenomenon, I figured, I have to do something with this and went to work on it.

The Yamaha keyboard you asked about is called a 730. It's about 5 years old I think at this point and ran me close to $1700.00 Canadian, new in the box.

I am not familiar with the term motif? Is that a product or a feature?

This one that I have, has a 16 track sequencer built into it and a ton of editing and mixing can be done directly through the board without a computer which is perfect for me as I am not comfortable with computers and audio. I like to see reels turning when I track. It makes me warm inside to see and smell the oxide from the tape!:)

Holy 'Studio 54' is right. It sounds like you picked out some very nice samples for the song, i thought the bass was nice and convincing. It almost made me want to watch 70's porn like boogie-nights or something.

I couldn't make out some of the lower vox, i'd say maybe give some of those lines a boost or something. What i could make out though was very clever, well done.


Well studio wanted punk and you went with disco but hey at least you used the right decade.

I never thought anything would happen with these lyrics. I thought they would sit on my hard-drive for a rainy day, or until I bought a guitar. I don't own a guitar at this time. So who needs a damn guitar huh ? Just kidding folks, don't hurt me :D

So I'm learning about the magic of this board right away.

I guess all you really need is to share, (gush), and I appreciate - The Ghost of FM - and all his hard work in making music for us to enjoy. This man honestly wants to entertain, and he does a great job. ;-)

I think I would like to sing the 'clean vocal' ... yeah ... the faggot part !, or at least do some backup vocals in that spot, some harmony vocals. I just can't get 'Macho Macho Man' out of my head ... oh dear, where's my valium ... :D

One thing for sure, I'm learning a lot about Zappa, and what drives the ears and minds of our board's analog tape devotee's. From Samicide to The Ghost of FM, and now Piltdownman, there's some heavy Zappa on these boards now. And that can be very good for us 'digiheads' as we strive to warm up and give body to our mixes.

We all know - The Ghost of FM's - drug of choice now ... it's sniffing the oxide from the tapes. Hey man ... I scored a primo bag of oxide, want some dode ? :D ! Uh oh, shhhh , watch out ... the cops ... hide it, hide it, hurry, hide it man ! :D YOU SPILLED THE SHIT !!!! AAAhhhhhhgggGGGhhhh !!! ... get the magent, get the magnet man ... hurry ... here ... gimmie yer comb dude ! :D OH NO ! DROPOUTS ! No, no man, that's just a hair, it's still good ...

There's a chick that plays bass in a band in Austin that likes to sniff 'sharpies' ... I mean , to each his own ... and I kinda like to sniff my genuine TDK black CD marker pen ... oh god ... come to think of it, I like the smell of a fresh pack of CD writeables, it's tangy ... I'm wierd ! And damn proud of it. And proud to be a part of this board.

So the lyrics are a product of STRONG feelings, and a little anger, some frusteration, some betrayal, confusion ... this is what I felt, and I had to vent it, I had to explore it, I had to rant. I had to embrace it.

I am humbled by - The Ghost of FM -'s talent and his ability to execute the 'Steps of Production' to bring a song into being so quickly and efficiently. Amazing. He is a songsmith.

All of it's the muse and we really never planned any of this. Hell, I don't really think we have any plans from here either ... rawk on disco duck !

I guess we owe it all to this board, and all of the members and the musical magix here.

What can you think ... I hear a melodic punk rocker, and we get a masterpiece of modern-electronic-dance-hybrid-broadway GOD ... awesome ... what the hell is this song ... maybe, I'm not qualified to judge it eh ? ;-)

The Ghost of FM has put a very, very controversial subject, the very essence of humanity, our sexual choices, in a comedic form, and we must laugh, we can't help it ROFL ... god I'm laughing now ... stop it ! ... focus ! :-|

I can't step back from this yet ... And I will wait on a technical analysis until The Ghost of FM has had time to do his guitar work, make his tweaks and stuff and all that, and then I can sit back and enjoy it even more. Geee, I think I wanna' be a songwriter when I grow up, this is fun !

I'll say what I can say at this point though :

Catchy title that's his, The Ghost of FM clearly defined the hook here. The whispered, 'then I'd rule', in the outro is just classic ! Oh god, giggle fit ...

I really like the bass. Great sound and supports the song well. Nice keyboards. The recording and mix sounds great top to bottom.

Didn't care for the song though.

Little vocal syncing issues at :46 and 2:05.
 
Very nice production! The sounds you chose were very appropriate. Nice work. I agree a guitar will help bring a little life to it - un-midi-fi it so to speak. Make it a little more organic.

The vocal concept was very well done and well performed.

I can't even fathom all of this out of a keyboard. I'm a midiot!

Studio - I appreciate your lyrics and what brought you to them. I think there is lot of discussion that could revolve around them that I probably don't have time for. I would just say perception is very important in our society these days. Way too important in my opinion. Things are very focused on the surface and what is in. I think it is unfortuantely an unstoppable force in the mainstream of America.
 
I`m with Lt on this. It sounds real good and I aint got no issues. Ya`ll did an excellent job. There`s a lot of work, talent, and taste reflected here. :)

Aarrrghhh!!!!!!!

I get this message every so often when trying to stream from NoWhereRadio. Doesn't matter if I log in or not. I don't seem to have a problem if I download the file, but I don't like do that at work.

I'm using Windows media player. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, I get this problem also, and I get this in WMP, as well as when using DAP, a download manager and download accellerator.

I don't think it is a client side issue, and the best way around this is to support nowhereradio.com and TheRealWaldo 's efforts.

You got a spare compressor you could send him ? He needs one. :D

TheRealWaldo did mention something about caching issues recently, and possibly as your client tries to download, there is actually nothing there. Could be that some identifier that points to the file has expired.
 
Okay, I'm hearing the Bowie influence in there (vocal wise, anyway) with some Zappa thrown in for good measure...I haven't read all of the comments here, so I may repeat something.

First off, lyric wise, this is very funny, but it actually flows quite well. I almost lost it on the first line...lmao! :D

Production wise, this is very good. It sounds nice on my speakers (cheap computer speakers) ... the vocal may come up just a tad, but that is about all the nitpicking I can find.

Very funny song and very well done!

I really think The Ghost of FM knows how to mix for any set of speakers, and he knows the target audience on the internet is using computers, and computer speakers. He's very insightful in this way.

He is also specifically doing his mixes by putting a lot of thought as to how it is going to finally convert to an MP3, and how the computer speaker will present that, (computer speakers as a class of speakers).

And The Ghost of FM is not only concerned with how it will 'translate' to an MP3, but he is thinking actively and purposefully as to how it will translate into a 128kbps MP3, or a 192kbps MP3 ... and the differences both subtle and great that occur with each, and why one mix does better at 128kbps than another and so forth.

He's come a long way, and as I understand it, he has a long history of experience with 16 and 8 track 1-inch and 2-inch ANALOG tape ... and all the outboard gear that goes along with that.

I have a lot to learn from his mixes.
