Does anyone know of a good studio desk/workcenter for around $100? Everything that I've found online seems to be really expensive. ($500 and up) Just wondering if anyone knows of any solid deals. Thanks for the info.
 
Good and $100 don't go together when talking about studio furniture. $100 will only buy you some cheap imported crap made in China. Hell, $200 still means you're buying something that is putting american workers out of a job and forcing US furniture manufactuers out of business (case and point Bush Industries last month).

Pardon my bitterness, but I used to be a Bush furniture designer. I lost my job for the reasons above.

I build desks. I'll build one for costs, plus labor and shipping.
 
The Studio RTA stuff may be overseas, but it's pretty sturdy. I just picked up what I think was a mismarked item at GuitarCenter. This desk is priced at $299.

I got it from GuitarCenter for $199. I was going to go for the Quiklok Z555 desk. But for $199, I couldn't pass this up. The bridge was too high for my taste, so I cut it down to 4 spaces and bought new rack rails for it.

Is it a nice oak console tht the pros use? Nope, but it's a very functional bargin at $199. Good luck.

Yeah, I can build the desks with racks in it; I'll try to get a picture of the desk I built for myself last year.

I bought this one at the evil country called Wall Mart for about $100.00. I appologize to anyone who lost their job because of my purchase but I only had a hundred bucks cause I lost my job.

The rack on the right was added on by me where some rounded book shelf was. I especially like the sound reduction offered by the cabinet on the right and the extra wide pull out keyboard shelf.

Bush says that they note it in the product description if they
use real wood.I didnt see the words "real wood" anywhere in this products description.(I am fairly certain that the"Cherry"
reference is a description of the fake finish,but I could be wrong)
Please tell me why I should pay more for less desk?

bet it goes together much the same way that the Leda does.
I would also bet that the screws and bolts and such that it is
assembled with were manufactured in China or Taiwan.

Lets see...

Bush uses 19 to 25mm particleboard which is laminated with melamine. The metal legs are thicker gauge steel with solid welds (made locally in Western NY). Most importantly Bush's corporate policy is that EVERYTHING must pass UL safety standards and load tests.

Leda uses 16mm particleboard with cheap paper laminates and their metalwork is total crap with spot welds that don't hold anything together. Setting a full size CRT on the desk you pointed out would make the tops bow in no time.

And FYI, the Bush piece you found is at least 7-10 years old and has been discontinued for quite some time.

Try looking up Office Pro/Office Advantage, Office Arc and Delta pieces instead.

Oh and BTW, Bush sources their hardware from German companies like Hettich and Haefele.

I will agree with you that most Chinese products are shit,but
the leda desk is a very good bang for the buck.
I am pretty sure that most folks on this bbs own at least 1 or 2
items that are made in china.Kind of hard to avoid when you are into the recording/computer thing.
Anyway,sorry about the loss of your job and all,but as long as it is my name on the paycheck I get every week,I'll spend it on the
particle board of my choosing.
 
I think the real debate should be an ethical one. The working condition in China is notoriously inhumane, some of which includes prison labor. Many manufacturers sub contract their work to people who then subtract tht work out to others. Its hard for U.S. distributors to keep track of every factory their merchandise comes from, and to monitor every plant where the merchandise is made. The job loss and economic shift towards China is very real.

How can you be so naive? They don't. You ever heard of Tiananmen Square? A student getting crushed by a tank for protesting? To this day, people protesting at that square get sent to labor camps where they are forced to work 18 hour shifts, get stabbed with scissors and have bricks thrown at them for passing out due to exhaustion, are exposed to toxic substances on a daily basis, among other horrors. I'm just pointing out your hypocrisy. Your judging another country and their citizens without really understanding what is happening. I'm just pointing the mirror back at you. If you're gonna point out somebody's faults, start with your own first.

I do not have a problem with the people in Asia, only corporate greed and the politicians who don't do anything to break this vicious cycle and in the end perpetuate this kind of behaviour.

Boycotting product from Asia hurts a corporation's bottom line more than anything and that is what needs to be done. Rhythmschism has already pointed out how Asian manufacturing isn't really helping the people in those countries.

If you didn't get that point in the first place, you really don't have a clue.
