Does anyone know of a good studio desk/workcenter for around $100? Everything that I've found online seems to be really expensive. ($500 and up) Just wondering if anyone knows of any solid deals. Thanks for the info.

Good and $100 don't go together when talking about studio furniture. $100 will only buy you some cheap imported crap made in China. Hell, $200 still means you're buying something that is putting american workers out of a job and forcing US furniture manufactuers out of business (case and point Bush Industries last month).

Pardon my bitterness, but I used to be a Bush furniture designer. I lost my job for the reasons above.

If you want something decent, spend at least $400 on American made furniture from Omnirax:

I build desks. I'll build one for costs, plus labor and shipping.

The Studio RTA stuff may be overseas, but it's pretty sturdy. I just picked up what I think was a mismarked item at GuitarCenter. This desk is priced at $299.

I got it from GuitarCenter for $199. I was going to go for the Quiklok Z555 desk. But for $199, I couldn't pass this up. The bridge was too high for my taste, so I cut it down to 4 spaces and bought new rack rails for it.

Is it a nice oak console tht the pros use? Nope, but it's a very functional bargin at $199. Good luck.

Yeah, I can build the desks with racks in it; I'll try to get a picture of the desk I built for myself last year.

I bought this one at the evil country called Wall Mart for about $100.00. I appologize to anyone who lost their job because of my purchase but I only had a hundred bucks cause I lost my job.

The rack on the right was added on by me where some rounded book shelf was. I especially like the sound reduction offered by the cabinet on the right and the extra wide pull out keyboard shelf.

Here is a link to a Bush desk:
http://www.racksandstands.com/asp/show_detail.asp?sku=BU1492&catid=1813
It has a smaller work area than the Leda, and less features,
yet it cost $159.00 more .
Bush says that they note it in the product description if they
use real wood.I didnt see the words "real wood" anywhere in this products description.(I am fairly certain that the"Cherry"
reference is a description of the fake finish, but I could be wrong)
Please tell me why I should pay more for less desk?
It says that the the Bush desk comes ready to assemble.I'll
bet it goes together much the same way that the Leda does.
I would also bet that the screws and bolts and such that it is
assembled with were manufactured in China or Taiwan.
Looks like your stuff is shit too, just not cheap shit!

Lets see...

Bush uses 19 to 25mm particleboard which is laminated with melamine. The metal legs are thicker gauge steel with solid welds (made locally in Western NY). Most importantly Bush's corporate policy is that EVERYTHING must pass UL safety standards and load tests.

Leda uses 16mm particleboard with cheap paper laminates and their metalwork is total crap with spot welds that don't hold anything together. Setting a full size CRT on the desk you pointed out would make the tops bow in no time.

And FYI, the Bush piece you found is at least 7-10 years old and has been discontinued for quite some time.

Try looking up Office Pro/Office Advantage, Office Arc and Delta pieces instead.

Oh and BTW, Bush sources their hardware from German companies like Hettich and Haefele.

Quote from Leda's website:

With over 20 years of manufacturing experience and based in Taiwan, (LDC) thrives in the computer furniture market place with unique, stylish, ergonomic, and affordable lines of computer furniture for the small office and home office (SOHO/KD). Today LEDA has acquired additional manufacturers throughout Asia that meet our strict quality guidelines to satisfy the growing needs of our ever-growing customer base.

Quote from Bush's website:

Manufacturing Locations: Jamestown, New York; Little Valley, New York; Erie, Pennsylvania; Greensboro, North Carolina; Tijuana, Mexico; Mastholte, Germany; Mantinghausen, Germany.

So it is okay to buy stuff made in other countries,as long as
it is not made in Asian countries?
I will agree with you that most Chinese products are shit, but
the leda desk is a very good bang for the buck.
I am pretty sure that most folks on this bbs own at least 1 or 2
items that are made in china.Kind of hard to avoid when you are into the recording/computer thing.
Anyway, sorry about the loss of your job and all,but as long as it is my name on the paycheck I get every week,I'll spend it on the
particle board of my choosing.

I think the real debate should be an ethical one. The working condition in China is notoriously inhumane, some of which includes prison labor. Many manufacturers sub contract their work to people who then subtract tht work out to others. Its hard for U.S. distributors to keep track of every factory their merchandise comes from, and to monitor every plant where the merchandise is made. The job loss and economic shift towards China is very real.

"...the United States buys more goods from China than it sells there – a gap of $124 billion in 2003, an all-time high. By country, the U.S. trade gap with China is the largest, twice that with Japan, the next largest, and it makes up almost one-fourth of the total U.S. trade deficit. Putting that into perspective, in 1989, at the time of the Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing, the U.S. trade deficit with China was $6 billion."

"Representatives from hard-hit furniture, pharmaceutical and agriculture industries all testified. A third-generation apple grower from Winchester described how the industry is being crippled by apple concentrate being produced in China and dumped in the United States. The Chinese government significantly subsidizes its apple industry, uses cheap labor and has virtually no environmental regulations.

A recent report produced for the National Association of Manufacturers asserts “that if our manufacturing base continues to shrink at its present rate, critical mass will be lost, the manufacturing innovation will shift to other global centers.

Once that happens, a decline in U.S. living standards in the future is virtually assured.” A national manufacturing expert testified that “if the 20-year trends of 20 percent import growth and 12 percent export growth were to continue for just five more years, the U.S. trade deficit with China would triple to over $330 billion.”

Some other things you might be interested to know about China:

"In Shenzhen's hospital wards, maimed factory workers nurse mangled hands and forearm stumps. They tell of factory managers who've removed machine safety guards that slowed output, and of working on decrepit, unsafe machinery. Workers toiling 100 hours a week grow dazed from fatigue, then lose their fingers to machines."

"...industrial machinery will crush or sever the arms, hands and fingers of 40,000 Chinese workers this year..."

"...foreign consumers should be aware that some 'Made in China' products 'are tainted with blood from cut-off fingers or hands'."

"With no safety training, the worker is assigned to an unfamiliar machine."

"For a young person, losing a hand spells doom. With as many as 20 million healthy people clamoring for jobs each year, factory owners never hire disabled people. Dismembered workers are condemned to destitution -- and often loneliness."

Horrors of Chinese Labor Camps:
http://www.axisoflogic.com/artman/publish/article_6088.shtml

"Imagine a country where factory workers have no workplace safety, labor or environmental protections and are required to work 80-hour weeks for no more than $110 per month to produce goods for export.
Imagine a country which boldly supplies missile and chemical weapons technology to countries that support or harbor terrorists.

Imagine a country that oversees a network of espionage operations against American companies.

Imagine a country which is plundering a neighbor and wiping out its religion-based culture.

Imagine a country which tortures and imprisons Catholic bishops, Protestant church leaders, Muslim worshipers, Falun Gong followers, and Buddhist monks and nuns just because of their faith and systematically destroys churches and confiscates bibles.

Imagine a country which has a thriving business of harvesting and selling for transplant kidneys, corneas and other human organs from executed prisoners who are thrown in prison with no trial or sentencing procedures.

Imagine a country which maintains an extensive system of gulags – slave labor camps – as large as existed in the former Soviet Union that are used for brainwashing and “reeducation through labor.” Yet, none of this is imaginary.

Such a nation exists. It is the Peoples Republic of China and that country supplies half of all the merchandise imported into the United States, other than from Canada and Mexico"

I'm not preaching, or pointing my figure at anyone. Just some things to think about.

Imagine a county with citizens that put up with that shit.

How can you be so naive? They don't. You ever heard of Tiananmen Square? A student getting crushed by a tank for protesting? To this day, people protesting at that square get sent to labor camps where they are forced to work 18 hour shifts, get stabbed with scissors and have bricks thrown at them for passing out due to exhaustion, are exposed to toxic substances on a daily basis, among other horrors. "...when seeing prisoners fall asleep while working, the guards shock them with electric batons and order the head of the workshop, also an inmate, to hit them with bricks and wooden clubs. If a detainee fails to complete his assigned work, the guard will cuff him to a heating pipe, strip him naked and shock his neck, armpits, abdomen, private areas, mouth and ears with electric batons." - http://www.axisoflogic.com/artman/publish/article_6088.shtml
Wake up, and realize where you are.

I really did not mean for this to turn into a personal argument, but I was not expecting such an unconscious and arrogant response.

Imagine a country where people don't care whats going on outside of their back yards and then complain when people fly planes into buildings and kill thousands of people.

Imagine a country where people cry bloody murder when they have to pay more for gas and its still less then what the rest of the world pays.

Imagine a country which claims to be a true democracy yet still uses an antiquated system called the "Electoral College" to select their president which was left over from the days when the vast majority of the population was illiterate.

Give me a break.

Imagine an asswipe that advises others to boycott products
made in Asian countries, and then insinuates that people de-
serve death(in the thousands)for not being more considerate

Read again, BUD.

I'm just pointing out your hypocrisy. Your judging another country and their citizens without really understanding what is happening. I'm just pointing the mirror back at you. If you're gonna point out somebody's faults, start with your own first.

I do not have a problem with the people in Asia, only corporate greed and the politicians who don't do anything to break this vicious cycle and in the end perpetuate this kind of behaviour.

Boycotting product from Asia hurts a corporation's bottom line more than anything and that is what needs to be done. Rhythmschism has already pointed out how Asian manufacturing isn't really helping the people in those countries.

If you didn't get that point in the first place, you really don't have a clue.
