I ordered my wall plates (XLR) and XLR plugs. I also ordered my cable to connect the two. When the wire came in it was two conductor with a ground. My XLR jacks have 4 terminals. I called the place I ordered it from (I have had nothing but positive experiences with them so far) and he said that the ground is connected to the ground on the jack and pin 1. Black and Red are connected to pins 2 and 3. I was under the impression that 3 conductor cableing was used with a ground separate. Granted I have never built XLR cables before, just wanted to ask the question before I soldered 100+ connections. Thanks.

Gatorhaus - Your supplier is correct. 1 is ground, 2 is usually red and 3 is black or sometimes clear.

Good Luck
Kevin.

Thanks for your quick response Kevin

Lots of soldering ahead,

gatorhaus...it's a good idea to connect a normal wire to your earth connection. By that I mean, the shield is the ground but is made from a mesh. Solder a new wire (green) to the mesh and then wrap a piece of heat shrink around it and seal it off. You then have a red, black and a green wire to solder to your XLR pins.

It takes extra work but is much more reliable than using the mesh straight.

John,

The unshielded wire I have is a separate wire not a shielded ground, the three conductors are shieled by a metallic foil.
I planned on soldering the unshielded conductor to the ground (metal case ground) on the plug and pin 1, and solder the red and black to pins 2 and 3.

Hope this makes it clearer on the type of cable I have. Please don't tell me to replace the 500' spool, lol.

Thanks,
Gatorhaus

After reading that maybe its not clear,
I have 2 insulated wire and 1 unisulated wire, all three are surrounded by a metallic foil shield.

Maybe this is clearer.

sheesh this communication things is tough sometimes, I know what I'm trying to say but cant write it.

I'll keep trying,
Thanks for all your input,
Gatorhaus
