For the last few years I've been "just getting by" with a Tascam 424, a few decent mics, some good headphones and recently, a lexicon MPX100. I'm about to step into digital recording using my PC. On the PC setup side I'm all set, but when it comes to connecting the equipment together and the "proper" procedures for recording, I'm totally lost.

I'm not exactly sure what would plug into what jack on each component and the correct/best order to place everything in. I haven't actually purchased anything yet, but I wanted to make sure everything is going to work together before I spend any money. The things I'm confused about are little things, like:

If I were to buy an audio I/O card such as a delta 44, it has 4 ins and 4 outs. I'm assuming I would get a 4 bus mixer and send the output of each bus to the input on the breakout box...but where would I send the 4 outputs to get them to the monitors? Are there "wiring diagrams" that show what component connects to other components for a basic setup?

Or, what order should I place signal processors like compressors and the MPX100?

And finally, a general outline for recording procedures. I get good results with the tascam for simple songs, but when it comes to doing many tracks or vocals I get lost. Is there a good book or howto on proper techniques for recording?

Thanks,
