when you record in your own studio or just any studio, should you strain your voice and sing loud just like you were when you play live, or take it just a little bit easier and quieter and work on good singing and then adjust the volume when you get done...will this sound different in the mix? i just got my first condenser and i havent messed with vocals just yet that much, and i was just wondering what is the best ways to record vocals...thanks!

Im no expert but I would think that each song's vocal requires a different style and intensity. Come up with that part first, then set up your mic accordingly to accomodate.

If you're voice sounds great singing loud in one song, go for it, and set your levels accordingly...

If you're into that moody depressing quiet brood, set your level accordingly...

Im sure more experienced folk will chime in here...

Straining your voice doesn't sound like a good idea live or otherwise.

Take your question down to the "Event" vocal forum..Down the hall ...at the bottom of the main page:)

Of course it will sound different. I don't even understand your question. Just start using your condenser and THEN ask a question if you have one. It's like asking "what does this taste like?" right before you put it in your mouth... JUST TASTE IT!!!

In my recording projects early on with my band we all sang much softer and more reserved to concentrate on making it sound really nice. We all hated how it sounded when it was done and our friends all told us "It just does sound like it does when you play live" On our next recording we let loose a bit more and people said, wow that is better than the last one.

For the last recording we did, we just belted it out and to date those tracks are probably the best.

YMMV
