Hey HR.com
Call me Claire...
I am a singer/songwriter.
I've been recording at home as a hobby for over 10 years now but it has been of minimal quality and only for templates.
I have joined this forum to improve my recording/editing abilities both in house and in the event I would need to take my records into a "professional" studio.
I do not want to be the ignorant musician so to speak when the engineer inquires as to what sound I am trying to develop and in the event I am trying to make a request to him/her.
I have some audio knowledge but I am entering this forum as humbly as I can and learning from scratch all that I need to learn.
I am open to suggestions on mixes and insights, etc. I look forward to building some great professional and personal relationships with some great people here.

Hi Claire, A good place to start is by reading all the "stickies" in the newbie Forum!

Welcome, read/search, and if you have specific questions, ask the in appropriate section of the forum. Lots to learn here!

Hi Claire. Welcome to the site.

There is a steep learning curve associated with recording at home. Some obstacles not normally seen at a commercial studio and lots of compromises along the way. But it's all worth it. Once you get past the steep part of the curve and can be productive you'll appreciate the time and energy you put it. Writing and recording songs on the fly. Getting ideas down on 'tape' before you lose it. Recording at home and on your time has some huge benefits.

Sounds like you already have your goals established and you know what you want so the rest is fitting the pieces of the puzzle into place.

It can be frustrating at times to figure out the technology available to you, but don't get discouraged. Come to this site and ask questions.

peace,

LO when you said, "Call me Clare" it reminded me of that line, "you can call me anything you want, just don't call me late for dinner".

Alan.

Hello Claire,

Welcome, a good start here is to list the gear you already have starting with the computer/mac (see! We don't know, don't even know if you USE a computer to record!) .

Nothing deep, is it a laptop or desktop, CPU speed, ram fitted Operating System*.

Then audio interface, mics, cans, monitors, instruments and how you record them. Are you MIDIfi'ed? What recording software do you use?

Personal H'Horse. Unless you are very rich and can get someone else to do it for you you will find things break and also that you may want to connect things up in non-standard ways and there isn't a lead to do it. So, learn to solder and some basic cable making/mending skills. Also, learn some basic electrics, again nothing deep. Ohms law, learn to read signal flow diagrams (for mixers and such) get to grips with "gain staging" and some basics about decibels. Get a $20 digital testmeter.

*If you don't know all this about your computer download the little app' Speccy from....Speccy - System Information - Free Download

Have fun!
Dave.

What ever you do ... Never listen to what Moresound tells you. ;)
