I have a couple of Audio Tecnica 2020's and they are ok but not mind blowing.

Maybe at first i believed all the great reviews.

I hear the Studio projects range are also good but what about the AT 3035 , is anyone familier with these and out of the two which would you prefer?

Dave

The AT3035 is bright, but without the hyped top end. A really nice warm sounding mic. I like it as much as the AT4040, another terrific mic.

Iv never owned or used a B3 but I had a B1 and I also owned a 3035. If I had to choose, Id choose the B1/B3. The only thing that I ever really liked the 3035 on was a bass cab.... IMO it just completely sucked on vocals...Im sure there is someone out there who this mic is perfectly suited for....but I have never recorded them... :p

I also own an AT4040....and also in my opinion, the 4040 is leaps and bounds ahead of the other mics mentioned....

I have not used the B3, but i have a pair of B1's and I used to have a AT3035. The 4040 smoke's 'em all. Although, i don't htink that helped you at all.

The 3035 has it's uses. Percussion instruments, distant mic on guitar cabs, and even a decent acoustic guitar mic. Vocals? No way! It's not a true "large diaphragm" mic.

I'm not a fan of the Studio projects stuff at all. I don't like that hyped high frequency that they seem to all have.

YMMV

FWIW, i have a friend who produces/engineers full-time, and uses the 3035 almost exclusively on vocals

maybe it's just that it's the perfect mic for his room or signal chain or whatever...but he gets damn good results

It's a very warm sounding mic, which is probably one of the reasons your friend uses it a lot.

You guys mentioned the Auio technica 4040 . is there a huge difference then the AT 4033? which i have heard.

I really couldn't tell you, I've never used the 4033, but I think that range is real similar.

Mics generally aren't. The AT2020 is a fairly neutral small diaphragm condenser. It's usable for almost anything, but is probably best for things like acoustic guitar or overheads.

I'm guessing if you're looking at the B3 or the 3035, you're doing vocals. Definitely not the 2020's strongest suit.

the 4040 is flatter in the top end

hi dgatwood

Your right about the 2020 on vocals , its not its strongest point and thanks ironklad for that info on the AT 4040.

I feel a complete fool as I sold my SE Electronics 2200 A and I wish I kept kept it s it had a lovely tone on vocals.

Dave

From what I can get from reading the overall reviews here and other places is that the Audio Technica 3035 mic is lovely on vocals but not too fantastic on acoustic guitar.

Has anyone else found this to be the case.

Dave

well, depends on the guitar/vocalist/genre/situation.

However, I do own and use the 3035 and B3.
The B3 has switchable polar patterns, and sounds a bit harsh to my ears.
The AT3035 is a little more tame, but lacks the switchable patterns.

personally, I would probably reach for the 3035 on vocals, and the B3 set to omni on acoustic guitar. Really, it depends on half-a-million things.
