Ive been looking into getting 2 of these. Im after a set of all-round mics on a budget and ive heard some good things about these. Ill mainly be using them as overheads, on acoustic guitars and vocals.

Anyone got any first-hand experience with these who can tell me what you think? or any other recomendations in this price range?

Though I don't own one, the B1 has a very good reputation as an entry level mic. I don't think you'll find another condensor under $100 that compares. If you use the search function at the top of the page, you will find a wealth on information about this mic in this very forum. Welcome to the board and happy hunting.

i had 2 of the b-1s and just wasnt thrilled with them. i got mine at 79$ each and another 25 each for the shock mounts. i sold them and got 2 audiotechnica 4040-s and thought it was a better difference as a overhead and- guitar amp- vocal mic combo mic.got them brand new watching ebay for$ 195.00 each. funny thing was i won one mic and asked the store on ebay that was selling them to sell me another for the same price and they said no. the following week i won one even cheaper.

You can't go wrong at the price, if you ever decide to upgrade you'll probably keep them for guitar / guitar amps

i think that they sound fine as overheads, etc. go for it!

I've had a pair of SP B1's for two years now, and they've become my "swiss army knife" mics... IMHO, they work really well on a whole host of sources. Frankly, they're getting a lot more use than my Shure SM-81's ($400 each).

If for some reason I lost my pair (or they were stolen), I'd buy another pair of B1's in a heartbeat. I've used them as drum overheads, and I've even used them to record a complete band, live. I'm currently tracking drum tracks using a B1 and a B3 in an M-S configuration, and it sounds awesome.

I really like the CAD M179 for a 'cheap' all-around mic. I like my B1 too but the M179 is multi-pattern (and more expensive) and worth a look. I'd take a look at the new 20 series AT mic too. I really like my 3035 and I'm guessing the 20 series will be right up there in the entry level.

The B1 is actually a pretty decent mic, quite neutral for an LDC. So cheap you could use them as tom mics!

The B1 is OK for overheads and for instrument mic'ing.

If you add voice to that list then I'd recommend the AT4040 as one of the above posts suggests.

Lots of decent mics out there at a good deal. Opinions always vary. If you are new to this recording game then all I will say is this...The B1's are very placement forgiving when compared to the other mics people here are suggesting. What I mean by that is placement is not critical. The B1's work well by just being in the general area of what you want to mic. Placement is much more critical on the other mics and if you are new to recording, the B1's will probably perform better when not placed in the correct positions. As for vocals, they do very well. All of this of course is my opinion. I have 38 years experience... :)

Just looked at the 2020 again, looking at the frequency plot it looks like a 3035 without the roll-off and pad. I bet it uses the same electret capsule.

I looked at that 2020 when when it was announced and I'm pretty sure it had a different response

cheers for the help here - i study music tec a collage and have lots of nice mics to play with - but none of these! cheers.
