I'M BLESSED.......
I've noticed in some people's studio setup that they have a couple of pairs of studio monitors. What's the deal with that? I know that you can get by with one, but is getting two ultimately the plan?

It is best to reference from as many different sources as possible.

I myself use....

1) 5 different monitor pairs in my main room

2) My daughters radio

3) The sound system in the H2 Hummer

4) The custom system in my brothers Cadillac Escalade

5) The system in my wife's Honda Accord

6) The sound systems of three (3) different clubs that I dj

7) The main room at my uncle large sound production facility

I understand that you said that is what you use, I'm sure that is by preference and a good success rate. How often do you find yourself retrieving back to the lab to make adjustments? (Just out of curiosity) Do you find that using all of the different sytems
(your daughters radio, brother car, your wife's car, etc.....) that once you pull something out, or add something in, it won't balance equally on all the systems.

I always heard that the big humongous Urei 805's are for playing to the record company exec or ad agency bigwig.

The nearfields are where the real work gets done.

But seriously, more is better. I have a cheapass Panasonic boom box with an aux input. I monitor on that to augment my nearfields.

Now that I have better monitors AND now that I have learned my mixing room I only make one or two sets of adjustments.

I normally mix with my ALESIS M1 ACTIVES or my MACKIE HR 824's. They give me a realistic representation of my music.

I have also come to know that my mixing room tends to make me mix a little bass heavy. So, I turn the bass back a bit even when I think it is just right.

......................................................................

When I first started producing, I would CONSTANTLY make changes to my 2 track mix (beacause I didn't have good monitors). This is why I always stress to our new members that the monitoring devices are one of the most important parts of a setup.

I listen to my mixdowns on the various systems out of habit (because when you are submitting music to a record label or artist, you are not sure of the system they will be referencing [will it be in their office, will it be in their car, will it be at home, will they like the mix then have their dj play it at the club, or will they play it on their laptop will riding the train home from work?]).

Good explanation Spin
I've spoken with quite a few producers, and I have learned that they all have their different pet peeves. But I found that is what have made them all different and unique in their own way. But I have also learned that most Rules are significant in the overall success of a project.
Thanks for the info again though, I also read that other post that you forwarded regarding mixers and it's relation to recording.
Again, Good Looking

Peace

yo spinstress one, you should sell your gaudy war machine funding hummer and buy some real recording equipment.

Well sweatnobs.....

The maroon H2 Hummer at rest in my garage is a shared vehicle.

My three brother-in-laws and myself split the price on the truck.

Trust me, if I had the $50,000.00 liquid cash dollars, I would have purchased a new setup AND some more outboard gear (my equip list is approx. $48,000.00).

I'll holla' at cha' later, Slo' Mo'

H1!?

nah dawg. chillin in the ford escort station wagon is the best way to go...easy on gas, inconspicuous so i didnt have to worry about getting my car jacked and yet i had over 1k worth of equipment in there....i got the best representation of what i recorded from that....and then i was hit by some lady in an old chevy and that destroyed the reciever and a few speakers....lost a beautiful pizza in that crash too...still having nightmares. BUT! i like using car systems for reference...maybe I'm weird or something but i hear stuff that i dont hear with my speakers at home or in my headphones or the home theater system

alls well i guess

i havent heard anything bad about m-audio so I would assume they are pretty good. i personally get thrown off track using a subwoofer. when i mix stuff i keep wanting to make it sound good in the sub as well as the speakers and it seems to take longer than if i just had a pair of desktop speakers for mixing and then transferred it a subwoofer system for a test run
