You should make like a SWAN and fly around this site. Monitors? Man, more stuff here about them and on the net than cans.
For your budget, you should be able to find a pair that will sound like Aphrodite whispering sweet nadas in your ear.
I won't tell you that I like the Yorkville passives, YSM-1. Good price and good quality for the small amount of green they cost.
I'd take a hike to a vendor and bring one of your tapes or your favorite CD and listen to how it sounds on a whole bunch of monitors.

That's a nice budget to have. Check out the "studio" series from this website.....all these speakers are top notch.
