I would like some hints about good studio headphones. I mean the ones in the recording area used by the musicians. I'm not happy with the ones (Philips) I'm using right now. They must have good low respons / high damping factor on the outside / high output. price range about $100.

Everyone has their own favs... as you'll soon see... if you do a search on headphones you'll get your answers... if you can't be bothered then my vote goes for Sony MDR7506's.

i spose it is a preferance thing ... i would go for the AKG's ,but there a little pricy ... but very much worth it i think ...

I just got a set of Sony MDR-V900 headphones that the 14 year- old Guitar Center salesman
said would smoke the lows and loudness of the 7506's. Low and beholdeth he was right! A liitle more money than the 7506's; but I really get my ears to bleed without distortion .Although ,I do hate headphones in general.
Is there a cure for sweaty, bloody , sweaty ears!
Rock On!

If your just wanting some very good H/P for musicians, check out the ATH-M40fs I bought a set for my bass player last year for $120.00, I bought 3 sets a couple months ago for 59.00 a set at 8th street.

They are very comfortable, and sound great. Check it out!

Somehow, I just knew GT was going to slap a big ole' sloppy-wet KOSS on us! :)

Buy a pair of AKG K 240DF's which should be around the $100 mark and you will be more than happy. They are designed specifically for studio monitors, designed for comfort (for hours of use as they are), have a diffused field etc (so no interfiernece) and basically they are the best headphones without getting into the range of obscenly priced proffesional ones-try a pair out, I did and walked out with a pair.

My vote: AKG 270's. Pricey tho!. I want to hear what I'm recording or what is on tape or disk...FLAT response. Love the way Sony's sound, but colored to my ears. When you say studio I think TOOLS, not pleasant or necessarily appealing to the way I enjoy to hear music. I would say don't go with the flow... trust your ears and what you need to hear to make that mix "the bomb" of all mixes for your ears ( just like nearfields - I like Tannoys). Stay flat and true, you can't change Physics - just tweek with it. Take a little time and take your ears for a spin @ your local music store - drive them and yourself crazy. That's part of the FUN of this whole homerecording musical technological interface thing... you see??? Can't get too serious.

Didn't John Lennon write that one, GT?

Oh, sorry... that was "give PEACE a chance."

Nevermind... :)

Yes Buck,

You are correct.

I just gave away the hidden meaning in the song.

But seriously, Koss has been making phones for a long time, maybe longer than Sony, ect.

KOSS headphones are great. After about a year of heavy use they start to fall apart and they get a little distorted. I'ts a damn shame- I'm on my third set of TD/65's right now- They are very very comfortable and they do block out a good amount of sound. Optimus (radio shack) makes good headphones too. THE Sony's are good- But IMHO AKG's ARE TOTAL CRAP! overpriced and tiresome to listen in. I listened to a pair of Yahmaha's (Can't remember the model) in MARS the other day they just blew me away! the most comfortable pair I've ever had on my head. They cost justa little more than my KOSS standby, and I think I'll get a pair soon.

Check out the forums on www.headwize.com A whole BBS for headphone fanatics!

Thanks James HE,

I no longer feel so all alone!

I agree, Koss has a tendency to fall apart, but I've gat a pair of Sonys that are also falling apart.

I also agree that they may blow out easier than some phones, but that is due to their great efficiancy (loudness per watt).

Funny you mentioned the TD-65s, I just heard them for the first time on a display rack, yesterday. The display was Elfin music, a recording studio right here in town. This guy makes some great recordings. The TD-65s sounded awesome!!! Good choise.

I have a set of Koss which broke. I contacted them expecting my warranty to be up and was pleasantly suprised to find that
the parts were guaranteed for life and there
would be a five dollar shipping and handling
cost for the part I needed. I still have to
order the part though.

Sennheiser HD495...$89.99 at Musician's Friend.

Sony MDR-7506. I like them because they're COMFORTABLE and STAY ON YOUR HEAD! Frequency response down to 5 hz.

Yeah. Five.

They're great. I don't think you'll find them for less than $100.
