In ten years I hope to know as much you barefoot. Right now I can tell you a bunch of stuff about actually constructing an efficient studio, and lots about actually physially making a studio, but as far as that stuff goes you're light years ahead of me.

Thanks guys. That was an interesting little thought experiment for the train ride to work. Thank you also for sparking my interest! If I had time, I could put some numbers in there, maybe even setup a test system and collect real data. But, time is the scarcest commodity these days. Anyhow, a good qualitative feel for things is usually the most powerful tool.

You can find out that information and post it, but I really won't be using it. But I'm sure someone else out there will find it useful. I'm done with my walls so the time has passed for flush mounting my monitors.

Even if I had thought about it when I was in the planning stages of building my studio I probably still would have done it the way I did anyway. The big reason is I don't want to limit myself to the monitors I have forever. My monitors aren't AMAZING... they're REALLY good, don't get me wrong, and if someday I wanted to get bigger and better ones I wouldn't be able to to because te holes in my walls are fit for the ones I have right now. You can see my dilema. Oh well, I'll just use some really good 4" Auralex Wedgie foam behind the monitors, that should remedy the problem the best it will get for me.

Wouldn't just building another box around the speaker would do the same as flush mounting? Or does the fact that it's "in the wall" change something?

Yeah, the primary purpose of flush mounting is to increase the size of the front (baffle) of the speaker. This helps "even out" the way the lower and higher frequency sound waves emerge. The wall acts as an extended baffle.

Sooo, are you guys playing with an invisible ball and bat, or am I just asleep ? WHERE did you post your ideas on baffles/soffits/whatever ? Really interested, since I'm planning a re-model in the next 6 months. Thanks... Steve
