Hi,
just bought a "complete"studio with a 2" analog 24 track Studer A 827 recorder, its hissing a bit (like all analog tape recorders) What kind of noise reduction systems do I need? What pricerange are they in?

Just started to rebuild the whole studio...

Cool!

Congrats on your new studio!

Don't settle for anything but Dolby SR. I''ve seen 24-track systems go anywhere from $4k-$10k. You should be able to find one for $4k-$6k if you really hunt.

As A Note

Posting this in 1 or 2 forums is cool, but much more than that isn't too cool to most people around bbs' and newgroups.

Ok

Ok, sorry. Pretty new to this thing, just remove the other ones ok? Or can I do it myself?

Got a Dolby SR 365, I guess thats for the Studer 807 2 track? Everything is pretty much in a big mess...

It's alright. Just thought I'd mention in it. Nah, don't have to remove them. It was an honest mistake.
By the way, you shouldn't have to use NR @ 30ips. If you do, the recorder probably needs some tweaking. But @ 15ips, the low-end can be very cool and quite prefered, but there's noise issues, so Dolby SR is great for that.

If you were in my area, I'd help you get it all straightened-out!

Thanks!

Thanks, live in Sweden, might be too far... Bought 1/4 of the studio for a good price ($6000...) Included lots of old vintage gear. Just got the studer 827 all fixed up (by the only guy in Sweden that can repair / serve those machines...) so it should be ok at 30 ips, pretty new to this and starting to re-build the whole studio from from scratch and wanna make sure its done right. Have only done smaller demo / home recordings before.

Allot of the stuff in the studio is not even hooked up and just lays around (like the Dolby SR 365...)

Sweden? Beautiful country... But yeah, a bit far...

$6k! Damn!!! What else you get then? I mean $6k simply for nothing other than a beat-up A827 is a once in a lifetime chance!

By the way, pick me up a shockmount from Milab for my VIP-50, would ya? ;) My standmount tightening wing snapped and now is stuck I one position...

Stuff

Yeah, it was cheap a hell... Thats why I couldnt resist.

There was a bunch of DBX 160 (the old classics), tube tech compCL1b, the Studer 827 (which is in excellent shape by theway...) a studer A 807, Fostex DAT recorder, 8 Valley People Kepex 2, tons of mid '80 effects, and some newer once, some Behringer crap, and loads old mics, lots of Milab stuff... havvent had the chance or time to check it allout yet. Will do it over the weekend. The only thing I really miss is a good Mic pre amp (any good advice here?) and then a noice reducer so I can go at 15 ips ( the tapes cost $350 an last for 15 min on 30 ips...)

$350!!!

Here in Norway I never pay more then $150 for Emtec 900 and 911 tapes, someone is ripping you off.

You dont need NR unless you are doing jazz and acoustical stuff.

Record ar 15 ips, it sounds great!

keep an eye on www.digibid.com for the INTERNAL dolby SR. you will have a hard time finding external ones ( not that youd want that ) since so many people are using em as treble boosters!

Where do you buy your tapes in Norway? Might be an idea to check that out since $350 is the cheapest I found in Sweden...
