Stronger boom stand?

I've got a new boom stand (tripod) that has a pretty good know on it and stuff but the dang C1 I have keeps slowly but surely moving the tripod down or just straight falling over.

What do I need to do/get?

You'll get a lot of suggestions from real cheap to ridiculously expensive...I'll just through my "middle of the road" comments in:

Tama mic stands are very durable and have really nice clamps. Once you set them up they don't move, and they feel sturdy. They are in the $60 range.

In that same range are Peavy mic stands....I'm going to warn you against these because you can find them in most music stores and the music store guys will recommend them. They are fairly heavy and have an ok tripod that doesn't tip over...but they start wiggling really easy and you're constantly tightening them up. This is mostly due to the fact that they have extremely crappy clamps on them...you really have to crank them down to get the boom to stay in position. Some of them have telescopic ends too which translated means "never use that crappy feature unless you hate your microphone".

Check out Quik Lok's A-50 mic stand. I bought mine for about $125. Very solid.

the Atlas stands with the heavy triangular bases are far more sturdy than any tripods.
 
That would be the Atlas MS25 floor stand with the heavy duty 17" triangle iron base w/the 6" round chrome base plate cover -- and IMO, one of the best mic stands made -- made to last a life time.

Don't forget that SANDBAGS cost a lot less than a mic stand. IF you have a stand that is reliable but the base of it is not sturdy enough, don't hesitate to use a sandbag. They are cheap.

I like Peavey stands pretty well. I have used them live and in the studio for about 4 years now with no problem. They are only $20 -$25 here.

If you want the best look at AEA or Atlas. Just realize you could spend between $100 to $300 on a stand. It will probably last for the rest of your life though!!

Get a heavy base for boom stands. After that, get something that doesn't slip vertically. And always keep a roll of duct tape handy to either lock down the base or lock in the vertical/horizontal adjustments.
