I posted this message in the hip- hop dj forum thinking they would have the answer but i was wrong.....only one answered
I need to know if legally i can or cant do this i think i should be able to but what i think dont matter as opposed to what i can do well here goes

I purchased a cd called Downtown Strings sample cd but i dont need it now because my girl brought me the same cd. My problem is that they have both been open so i cant return either one. I want to sell one but dont know if i can. She dont know i have two so I dont plan on telling her but am i allowed to sell the extra one. I got mine in a bundle pack it was fairly cheap. I just want my money back or at least some of it. Hell thats money i can put to another sample cd. The company policy says if it is open they cant take it back for any reason but to replace it with another of the same. Here is a link to the cd demo. you producers might want to check this out, its quite nice. But my problem is again can i sell this thing and if so where is a good place and please dont say ebay. they got so many sample cds mine will never get seen. is there a hip hop version of ebay. If it's not software, you can probably sell it!

You could legally sell it even if it is software (so long as you deleted any copies you have).

It really wouldn't hurt to give it a try on ebay. Like it or not, that's where you're going to get the most exposure. Other than that, you may taking a gamble. For starters though, I'd post it in the classifieds for this site. They're a little bare sometimes, but they do get exposure.

Which raises a question I've pondered: If you sell a piece of software you have registered, how does the new owner register it in his/her name? Do you just email the company and transfer the registration?

Good question. I'd probably just register as the new owner, then if there is confusion, the software company would contact the seller who would explain the sale, and provide a reciept if necessary.

Software companies don't like it when you sell their software because they're not making money on it, but it is completely legal. Hence, they're probably not going to be eager to help transfer the registration. I wouldn't bother with it unless it was necessary. Many times (but not always), registering the product only ensures that you're on their junk mail list.

Thanks, the reason I ask is because if you are the registered owner you can often get excellent prices on upgrades. For example, If you could buy a used copy of Cakewalk Pro 9 for $50 you could then upgrade to Sonar for another $149. I think it sells new for $349 street price.

That's a hell of an idea. I could have saved some bucks if I'd done it that way.
