I'm looking to try out some Dynamic Vocal mics that can rival or surpass the sm58. I have 2 58's already and am looking for a little variety. Ive seen some high priced dynamic mics from AT, Audix, Sennheiser and AKG.
Anyone have any experience with these or others.
Much appreciated.
Todd

Another idea is to use a top notch mic pre to REALLY hear what you already
have. So-what kind of pre are you using now?

Chris

Unfortunatly, thats one of my weaker links. Im either using the pre's on my Behringer euro rack, the ones on the Boss BR-8, or just going direct in to my Gina.
Im planning on getting a (couple of) Audio Buddie(s) and a Spirit M-8 board sometime in the near future.
Im not unhappy with my 58's sound at all, Ive just never heard much about other vocal dynamics and was basically wondering if there was as much variety in the dynamic world as there was in the Large Diaphram Condensor world. Youre right though, I should check my current mic's with better signal before purchasing more mics.
Thanks,
Todd

yea tryout some pre's on your 58 before you go buy something else...

Are there any good music stores up in harrisonburg?? I live in Charlottesville VA and we don't have any stores with a whole lot (not really any atcually) for those options.

Todd, although the Audio Buddy is a nice budget pre, my understanding is
that the Spirit M series pre's are somewhat superior, and that could save
you some money. Experimenting with microphone placement will also
change the sound of your SM58's too.

Chris

no good stores up in harrisonburg. I always end up in DC/fairfax going to the chain stores.
Thanks for all the replies

Geez, you ask about mics and everybody wants to sell you a preamp! Listen to the nice guys because you need a pre. However, you haven't told us what the mic is for- On stage? mic'ing cabs? distorted/clean? drum overheads? I would say not to spend money on high-end dynamics you may not have the ideal signal chain for, but you might want to try some relatively cheap alternatives for a different on stage/recorded sound. I've had very good results with AKG D690, a discontinued but still in stores $80 mic, which I prefer to the 57 in most cases. I don't use 58, so I have to use 57 as a reference.- Best of luck- Richie

For a more sparkly detailed sound in a dynamic, you might want to try one with a neodymium (sp?) capsule. Examples of this would be the Shure Beta 58 or the EV ND series.
