Strange

i was trying out a new mic, and noticed a strange "chirp" sound. eventually, i discovered it was my FMR RNC. i have two RNCs, and they both make the same sound (and with every mic and every preamp i tried).

the sound occurs when the compressor is "tripped" and the gain reduction meter moves. it especially occurs during really low sounds, like gently breathing into the microphone or hand noise when i'm holding the mic in my hand.

it sound just like a bird chirping, and it's quiet...but now it's driving me nuts. anyone have any idea what is causing this?

Have you tried a slower attack on the compressor?

Wierd! I run my bass thru the RNC using either a slow attack on basic fingering and a quick attack on thumb-slapping and have never noticed any unwanted signal noise even when using my Aphex Bass Exciter for low'r freqy boost.

I don't know if you're using the unit in normal mode or not but if you are, switch to Super-nice as this is more desirable and suitable for sensitive material such as vocals, acoustics, etc. and like the prev post, lessen your attack speed.

Maybe there's a bird inside of it that gets turned on by heavy breathing??

just got some interesting replies over on gougle groups about this:

"Fast gain change causes distortion, one of the characteristics of them -
from he ir spec sheet - is that they can be set to really short release
times and it is mentioned that doing so will cause bass distortion,
something that is a property of the laws of nature rather of the RNC." (Peter Larsen)

"It's a discontinuity in the way it's pumping. Because of the digital
control path on the RNC, the pumping artifacts are a little different
than that of a regular compressor.
Don't crank it up so high that it does that, or do a bass cut in front
of it, or use another compressor." (scott)
