Strange volume/pan grouping problem

I've been using CEP 2.1 for a year or so. I just installed it on my new comp and decided to give it a test run.

I inserted a drum track (track 1), then recorded three guitar tracks. I used the volume envelope on the drum track to silence the hi-hat four-count at the beginning of the wav. I also used the volume/pan/etc.. controls on the left side of the screen to pan track 2 to the left 100%. Here's where it gets weird...

I can hear the hi-hat (track 1) but only in the left speaker. When i set the pan on track 2 to the right 100%, the hi-hat switches to the right...it should be 100% silent, but seems to pan with the track next to it. I tried selecting "solo" on track 1, and it went completely silent.
I did the same with tracks 3 & 4....same thing happens. When i bring the volume down on 3, you can still hear 1,2,3 & 4. When i bring down 3 & 4...3 & 4 go silent.

holy crap....i just tried to mute track 1, 2 & 3...but i can still hear all 4 tracks. I then muted track 4 (all tracks muted) and it finally went silent.

i've searched all through the manual but can'y find any reference to anything resembling my problem...i've also read through the settings several times but don't see anything that would appear to help.

If anybody has any ideas (i'm guessing/hoping it's something simple) please reply!!!

Your files are mono, aren't they? I have seen some efforts to record mono file but the result turn out to be a stereo file with one side emty?
Could you give us a picture/Screen Shot of your multi track view?
You have described too many strange things and I am not sure I understood everything correctly. (not your fault that I know only 250 words in English)

The multitrack view and the edit view both look exactly as they always have. This is very strange.

I was thinking more about picture of your project set up, with files, panning knobs, envelopes etc. One picture says more than 1000 words
I believe it when you say it is strange. I would really like to see it.

Yeah, tricky, tricky.....
A screen shot, as Sikter suggests, will help us to help you!!
Very interested in this issue, being a loyal CEP 2.1 operator from way back!! :D

I screwed around with it some more and realized that track 1 was bleeding onto track 2...and on down the line.

I found this thread: http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=117692

but none of the suggestions worked for me. I even pulled up CEP on my old comp and made sure all the settings were the same on my new one. All of my windows settings are good, except it wont let me adjust the recording levels for mic or line-in....the controls are there, but they're in a fixed position.

It may be the Realtek HD soundcard, seems alot of people have audio issues with realtek. Thanks for the responses and of course if anyone has any further suggestions, i'd appreciate those as well.

aHHHH!! A suRealtek?.......did that come with your PC?...is it a built in card?
Have you definately checked the settings>device properties section. Is it showing a Realtek?......just would like to know, for starters.

Also, you do realise that if you record a 'new' track, that you should only be monitoring all/some other tracks only, so they don't re-record themselves onto your new track.???..I use a couple of soundcards (Delta's) and a desk to monitor with zero latency, while I record.
How are you going about that?

Maybe getting a little off subject, but let's just get that out of the way first.

Also, are you recording with Mono or Stereo settings. (Hit the 'out' button on any track while in 'track view' and tell us the default setting)

Stay with us.......!

I bought an HP and it came with this card. When i hit 'out' on a track it says that my wave device is Realtec HD rear audio output....when i hit 'rec 1' on a track, i have it set to 'left' rather than 'right' or 'stereo'...simply because that's the way it was set on my other comp, you know, the one that works fine??? haha

My other comp is a cheap piece of crap that a friend built for me, i literally just plugged an amp modeler into the line-in and i was recording....no problems, no adjustments....so i assumed this nice new comp would be the same.

Not sure what you mean by "if you record a 'new' track, that you should only be monitoring all/some other tracks only, so they don't re-record themselves onto your new track.???"....on my old comp, i sometimes just followed the drums while recording, and other times i would leave a guitar track un-muted while recording...never seemed to make any difference.

So, my ritual goes like this....create drums in Acoustica Beatcraft, insert drums as a wave file into CEP, my guitar is going through a multi-effects pedal into the line-in on my comp (line-in volume has to be low so that my guitar tracks are at a reasonable level), record guitar on track 1, mute track 1 and record guitar on track two, then leave drums and one or more of the other guitar tracks un-muted while recording more tracks.

I realize that my set-up is ultra primitive, but when i first tried recording this way it worked, and sounded great so i just went with it.

While searching around last night i came across lots of forums where people were complaining about realtec.

I'll be honest though, i'm not interested in making massive upgrades to the way i record...my drummer has a home studio and i can record there anytime i want to. I'd just like to be able to record/work on ideas without alot of hassle. That being said, i need find a fairly easy, inexpensive way to fix this problem. Would something like this help me out in any way, without having to buy a whole bunch of other crap???

thanks again for the feedback!

E-MU 1212M Master-Level Recording System???

Yes, very good for $99!!! (that's seems good and would suit you well, I'm guessing).
For that price, surely, you won't go wrong.
Get it,...get it now!! :D

I don’t think you’ll ever regret your EMU-1212M card.
That’s really fine card with VERY GOOD AD/DA converters.
Realtek is going to give you a lot of trouble BUT still I can’t understand the problem you described in your very first post on this thread.
If you got a lot of bleed then it could make sense.

You can always record your ideas using integrated Realtek card but if you can effort to spend $100 for EMU 1212M do it.
You’ll get so close pro sound spending so little.
There are two versions of this card.
The old one with firewire interface and newer one without firewire.
They cut out firewire interface and don’t produce them any more.
It was something about compatibility etc and I wouldn’t buy the old version.
It doesn't mean you'll have trouble with it but I would rather buy the new one.

I record my ideas DI too. Just like you do (via guitar multieffect prossesor).
I had Realtek on my first PC and after a while I invested 10 bucks in SB Live card just to avoid inbuilt card.
Everyone is going to tell you that it was a shit card but my purpose was to record my ideas and spend some time to learn about this game.
I never had any trouble with SB Live card. I guess I was lucky.
Still I regret I did not spent 90 bucks more and began with EMU 1212M in the first place.

Good luck!

I have the EMU1212M. Great card. Took a little while to get used to the PatchMix mixer but other than that it's great.

I like both the 1212M and 2496 equally, if not the 1212 more.

Thanks alot for the feedback. The problems i described in my first post were all a result of bleeding....the next day my girlfriend pointed out that there was a signal on my guitar track before i started to play anything..haha. So, i put 2 and 2 together...

Sounds like i should probably go ahead and get the Emu 1212. I'm a little anxious about upgrading because i've had such good results through little effort and alot of dumb luck...but i think i'm more hesitant about it because i'm afraid it'll be great and i'll end up wanting to upgrade more, and more, and more...haha.

When i get things going i'll post the results...thanks again, everybody.
