strange sonar problem

hey everyone...my first post here...got sonar 2.0, got xp, p4, 512, motu 1224 interface...

its the strangest thing...when i record audio, everything peachy keen. when i lay down another audio track, its slightly behind. when i say slightly, i'm talking about five-hundreths of a second.

its so ambiguous at first i thought that i had just performed sloppy and had played late...so i tried again to the same ends...so i tried again, this time being very conscious of just playing the rhythm...same problem. finally, i zoomed WAY in on the wave form and moved the beginning of the second track to line up with the beginning of the first track (about 5 hundreths of a second), and when i played it back, everything was perfectly in sync...proving to me that it wasn't just me playing sloppy...the whole THING was off by that incriment.

i tried exploring on my own with audio offsets and things, but nothing worked at all to correct the problem. i don't know whether i'm hearing the playback 5 hundreths of a second late or if whats being recording is taking an extra five hundreths of a second. i'm hoping there is a universal way to compensate for that time to save me from literally having to pysically drag every take five hundreths of a second back so that its in time.

anyone have any ideas?

Although I don't know about your Motu, this has been seen with M-audio delta cards in the past. A driver update has since corrected it, but it appeared Sonar was unable to work out how long the playback latency of the driver was and so correctly compensate for it on new recordings. The fault happened with the WDM/KS driver, not ASIO (though at the time Sonar did not support ASIO so it was quite a problem).
So are you using ASIO or WDM/KS?

Also, have you changed the Motu latency buffer setting? If so, you should run Sonars wave profiler. That is how it works out how late the drivers playback is.

latency .
it can be a number of factors. its not your playing.
if you have a terrible sound card , this often happens.
please detail your computer configuration IN DETAIL plus your sound
card. different multitrack software corrects for sound card latency. but i dont know if sonar does.
more details please on your confign so i can comment further.
prolly there is a setting you can try in sonar to compensate.

What is your latency set to in Sonar? You need to get it down to around 5ms or less.

Or alternately you can turn off Input Monitoring. By using input monitoring you are hearing the guitar signal delayed by your computer's latency.

To allow monitoring with Input Monitoring turned off, there should be a setting in your sound card to allow for direct monitoring. This sends the input signal to the sound card directly to the sound card's output. Use this setting. However, note that this will not allow you to monitor with any effects that you might be using in Sonar (e.g., reverb or amp sim).

my mistake. didnt see the motu there.
i;m so used to folks with bad sound cards.
