Storing wav files to CD

I need to ask if I am doing this the correct way. I have some mono and stereo wav files done in ntracks and were recorded at 24 bits 44100. I now want to store them on a CD so I can delete the stuff on my hard drive. Do I mix these wav files down to 16 bits (can the mono files still be mixed down in the mono format?) and then put these files to CDR? I don't believe I can leave them at 24 bits, and I'm not sure if they can be in the mono format. Or do I send them to CDR just the way they are as I recorded them, both mono and stereo wav files at 24 bits?
What I have done up to now is reduced these files to 16 bit mono and stereo wavs. I am just waiting to see if I am doing this correctly, if someone could get me straight on this.
Thanks for any help.

For backup purposes it would be better not to burn an Audio CD-R, but to store the original WAVs as files on Data CD-R. Data Cds are much more reliable in getting your data back with bit-to-bit accuracy. And they can store your WAVs in any format, not just 44.1/16 required for Audio CD.

So, if you want to keep the files in their original 44.1/24 form (and this would be advisable, of course), just make the Data CD-R with them.
